Barcelona have closed the chapter on an unusual but productive preseason training camp at England's St George's Park, with manager Hansi Flick describing it as one of the finest he has ever experienced.

The Spanish champions spent eight days at the Football Association's national training centre near Burton upon Trent in rural Staffordshire, arriving on July 27 and returning to Catalonia on Monday. The tranquil setting — surrounded by golden fields and dairy farms — was a stark contrast to last year's preseason tour of South Korea and Japan, and exactly what Flick had in mind.

"I'd say it's one of the best training camps I've ever been on," the 61-year-old said at a press conference on Monday. "Conditions have been fantastic. Everything was very close by: the pitches, the facilities, and the grass was incredible."

The decision to swap lucrative tours to East Asia or the United States for the quiet of Staffordshire was driven by Flick, who made it clear after last summer's tour that he wanted to avoid long flights and harsh conditions. There were also options to visit Germany's Black Forest — near where Flick was born — and Scotland, but the club ultimately chose St George's Park for a third time, having previously used the facility in 2014 and 2016. Fellow La Liga side Valencia and Serie A's Genoa have also trained there this summer.

A Friendly Cancelled, Another Goes to Penalties

Barcelona lined up two friendlies for their week in England, though only one went ahead as planned. The first, against Championship side Birmingham City at St Andrew's Stadium on Friday, ended in a 2-2 draw before Birmingham won on penalties. The match was a sell-out, with Real Madrid's Jude Bellingham — who began his career at Birmingham — in attendance.

A second fixture against Preston North End, scheduled for Monday behind closed doors, was called off after the English side reportedly did not have enough first-team players available. Barcelona sources said Preston did not want to take risks ahead of their Carabao Cup first-round match against Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

Instead, Flick organised an intra-squad match, which ended 1-1 with goals from Fermin Lopez and Xavi Espart.

'Almost Like a Prison' — But Flick Got What He Wanted

While Flick and his coaching staff relished the focused environment, not everyone shared the enthusiasm. With no fans at the gates and the nearest town an hour's drive away, some players found the isolation testing.

"It's great for the coaching staff, but for the players it's almost like a prison," joked a dressing room source. "Yesterday we had a look, and the nearest place was an hour's drive away. There's nothing to do around here." Beyond snooker and table tennis, entertainment was thin on the ground.

Goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, however, tried to keep a positive outlook. "At least it's colder than Barcelona!" the Polish international said before a press conference.

The contrast between the peaceful Staffordshire countryside and the usual media circus that follows Barcelona was not lost on locals. "We're used to seeing football teams round here, but not so many journalists," said a waitress at The Bridge Inn, an Italian restaurant on the outskirts of Burton.

Young Stars Seize Their Chance

With several first-team players still on holiday following World Cup duty, Flick travelled with a youthful squad — and the youngsters made the most of their opportunity.

When asked who had impressed him, Flick highlighted Ebrima Tunkara, Orian Goren, and Xavi Espart in particular. "Ebrima is a great talent," Flick said. "Orian Goren too. We've got plenty of players. Xavi (Espart) has played here as a right-back and did very well against Birmingham. But you can also see in training that he's at a very high level right now. And there's plenty more."

Tunkara, a 16-year-old attacking midfielder who has been with Barcelona since the age of eight and risen through the La Masia academy to become a Spain youth international, drew particularly high praise. One Barcelona source said he "could be the next Lamine Yamal."

Goren, a 17-year-old attacking midfielder from Israel who joined the club in 2023, was the other youngest player on the trip alongside Tunkara. Brian Farinas, a 20-year-old defensive midfielder, also made an impression and could see first-team involvement this season, particularly with Frenkie de Jong sidelined by a knee injury — though Flick is expected to lean on more experienced options such as Marc Bernal, Gavi, or Eric Garcia.

Perhaps the most intriguing prospect is Hamza Abdelkarim. The 18-year-old Egyptian striker scored both goals against Birmingham, having just featured in four of Egypt's five World Cup matches. As a clinical centre-forward — a profile La Masia rarely produces — Abdelkarim is viewed as a long-term project, but the club want him integrated into the first-team group as a backup option this season.

Adeyemi's Debut

The Birmingham game also marked the first appearance of Karim Adeyemi following his transfer from Borussia Dortmund for an initial €22 million, with add-ons that could push the fee beyond €30 million. The German winger's arrival adds further attacking firepower to Flick's squad.

What's Next

Barcelona's preseason continues with an unusual three-way international fixture in Udine, Italy, on Saturday, August 8, where they will face Nottingham Forest and Udinese — each club playing the other two for 45 minutes.

The annual Joan Gamper Trophy follows on Wednesday, August 19, with 45-time Egyptian champions Al Ahly the invited opponents at Camp Nou in what serves as Barcelona's season curtain-raiser. A planned friendly against Moroccan club Ittihad Riadi in Tangier on August 15 has been delayed following the Ceuta migration crisis.

Barcelona's first La Liga fixture is away to Elche on August 23. Before that, those still on post-World Cup breaks — including France's Jules Kounde, England's Anthony Gordon, and the eight players in Spain's title-winning squad — are due to return on August 11 or 12.
