Board makes definitive call on defence

The board at La Liga champions Barcelona have made the definitive call to reinforce the options at the disposal of Hansi Flick in central defence over the final days of the transfer window.

According to Diario Sport, the Catalan giants have settled on signing a left-footed centre-back before the deadline passes. The report reads: 'Barca have made the firm decision to sign a left-footed centre-back. The idea is to finalise the deal soon.'

The need for reinforcements

The decision comes after a headline departure earlier this month, with Ronald Araújo joining Premier League giants Liverpool on a season-long loan. That has left Hansi Flick and his staff somewhat short-staffed at the back, with just Pau Cubarsí, Andreas Christensen and the converted Gerard Martín as senior options. Jules Koundé and Eric García — both now considered full-backs — can also fill in centrally when required.

Cortés set to leave

The incoming move will in turn see youngster Alvaro Cortés moved on to make room for the new signing. The 21-year-old centre-back was with the first team for pre-season but has now decided to leave, per Diario Sport.

It had looked as though Cortés would stay and be part of the first-team squad, making the late news something of a surprise. Hansi Flick said he was happy with his defensive options when quizzed about his backline in a pre-match press conference, but the rumour mill suggests there may be changes before the window closes. Cortés already has offers on the table, including one from Elche, and must now decide where he plays his football next season.
