Barcelona increase pressure with second Rodri bid

Barcelona have made a second offer for Rodri, worth €60 million plus add-ons, as negotiations with Manchester City move toward a potentially decisive stage. The proposal follows Barça’s rejected €45m opening bid and is designed to narrow the distance between the Catalan club’s valuation and City’s reported €80m asking price.

Reports in England say talks have progressed well, with Barcelona confident that bonuses included in the latest bid could help close the deal. The club is aiming to reach an agreement this week so Rodri can join training as soon as possible.

Rodri has reportedly agreed terms on a contract worth €30m gross annually, strengthening Barcelona’s belief that the player’s preference can help them complete the transfer. The Spain captain is understood to favor a move to the Camp Nou project, with the influence of manager Hansi Flick and the prospect of competing for major trophies central to his decision.

Barcelona must balance ambition and financial risk

The negotiations have also prompted questions over how far Barcelona should go financially. Rodri is 30, has undergone back surgery and suffered an ACL and meniscus injury in 2024. With only one year remaining on his Manchester City contract, paying the full €80m asking price would represent a significant commitment.

There are also sporting considerations. Rodri’s arrival could reduce the minutes available to Marc Bernal and Gavi, although a managed rotation plan could allow Barcelona to protect their veteran signing while continuing to develop younger midfielders. His leadership would be particularly valuable following Robert Lewandowski’s departure and the loss of the example he provided inside the dressing room.

Barcelona’s calculation is that Rodri’s experience and control could make the difference in the biggest matches, especially in the Champions League. The club believes his value will extend beyond his statistics if he helps deliver domestic success and a serious challenge for Europe’s top prize.

Real Madrid left with a midfield problem

Barcelona’s pursuit has also dealt a blow to Real Madrid, who had explored a move for Rodri after struggling to replace the control previously supplied by Toni Kroos and Luka Modric. Madrid have spent €240m on six players this summer, but the midfield issue remains unresolved.

The club signed Bernardo Silva on a free transfer through 2028, yet the Portugal international is not a direct replacement for Rodri’s deeper No. 6 role. Manager Jose Mourinho reportedly wanted a creative midfielder and continued to seek another option, while the club’s current position is that no further midfield signing will be made unless a player leaves.

Madrid’s internal concern centers on the absence of a player who can dictate tempo and protect the team’s defensive shape. Potential profiles identified as stylistic alternatives include Alexander Pavlovic, Nico Gonzalez, Aleix Garcia, Angelo Stiller and Exequiel Palacios, though there is currently no indication that Madrid will pursue any of them.

For now, the focus remains on Barcelona and Manchester City. The €60m bid is not yet an agreement, but it signals that Barça are prepared to move substantially from their opening offer. The next stage of negotiations will determine whether Rodri becomes the centerpiece of Flick’s midfield or whether City hold firm on their valuation.
