Injury-Hit Wales Lose Seven Players Ahead of Albania World Cup Play-Off

Wales will be without seven key players due to injury when they face Albania in their two-legged Women's World Cup qualifying play-off semi-final next month.

Influential Liverpool midfielder Ceri Holland headlines the list of absentees after being sidelined for her club's previous three matches. The 28-year-old has been a cornerstone of head coach Rhian Wilkinson's squad, taking on an elevated leadership role following the retirement of veteran star Jess Fishlock in 2025.

Heavy Injury List Impacts Wilkinson's Selection

In addition to Holland, Wales will be without goalkeeper Olivia Clark, experienced centurion Hayley Ladd, Laura Hughes, Ffion Morgan, Ella Powell, and Mia Ross due to fitness concerns.

With Leicester City's Clark ruled out, Safia Middleton-Patel—currently on loan at Watford from Manchester United—remains the only goalkeeper in the selection with senior international experience. Meanwhile, Crystal Palace defender Ladd, who boasts 115 caps, leaves a notable void in defence and leadership.

Wilkinson Turns to Youth

In response to the selection crisis, Wilkinson has called up six uncapped players, including first senior call-ups for 18-year-old duo Casi Gregson and Heidi Hills.

Gregson, an attacker for Newcastle United, and Tottenham Hotspur wide player Hills are joined among the newcomers by goalkeepers Soffia Kelly and Poppy Soper, Wolves' Olivia Francis, and 19-year-old defender Cadi Rodgers, who recently signed for Plymouth Argyle from Chelsea.

Path to the 2027 World Cup

Wales travel to Shkoder to face Albania in the first leg on Friday, 9 October, before hosting the return fixture in Llanelli four days later. The winner over two legs will advance to the play-off final in December to meet either Norway or Romania.

Progress through both European play-off rounds would still leave one final hurdle: the lowest-ranked of the eight European play-off winners must navigate an inter-confederation play-off tournament early next year to confirm their spot at the World Cup in Brazil.

Wilkinson's side enters the play-offs in strong form, unbeaten in their last eight matches after securing top spot in their qualifying group in June.
