Flick Hints Barcelona Transfer Business Not Done After 5-2 Basel Win
Barcelona Cruise Past Basel in Pre-Season Thriller
Barcelona continued their pre-season preparations in emphatic fashion on Sunday evening, recording a commanding 5-2 victory over Swiss side Basel. The LaLiga champions delivered an entertaining attacking display, racking up 25 shots and generating 4.3 expected goals (xG), while limiting Basel to just six attempts on goal.
New signing Karim Adeyemi opened his account for the club in the 34th minute, firing Barcelona into the lead. However, Basel struck back shortly before half-time through Jean Doucoure, sending the sides level into the break.
Substitute Hamza Abdelkarim restored Barcelona's advantage shortly after the restart, before a late flurry of goals brought the friendly to life. Lamine Yamal converted from the penalty spot in the 81st minute after Jules Kounde was fouled inside the box. Basel's Kazeem Olaigbe immediately responded with a penalty of his own to narrow the deficit to 3-2, but a late brace from Jesse Bisiwu — who scored twice in two minutes — sealed a comprehensive win for Hansi Flick's side.
Both Adeyemi and Bisiwu notched their first goals in Barcelona colours, an encouraging sign for the German coach as he integrates new arrivals into his squad. Despite the convincing scoreline, only six of Barcelona's 25 shots were on target, an area Flick will no doubt want to sharpen before competitive action begins.
Flick Hints at More Arrivals Before Deadline
Despite the impressive performance, Flick was candid in his post-match assessment, conceding that Barcelona's squad may still be incomplete as the transfer window remains open. The Blaugrana have already secured first-team signings in Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi, and youngster Jesse Bisiwu from Club Brugge, but questions persist over depth in defence and at centre-forward.
Barcelona's sporting director Deco and his team are reportedly working on deals for João Cancelo, Rodri, and Julián Alvarez. Manchester City are said to have accepted a €76.5 million bid for Rodri, while Atletico Madrid's Alvarez continues to be heavily linked with a move to the Camp Nou.
When pressed on the club's transfer plans after the Basel victory, Flick offered a tantalising hint that further arrivals could be on the way.
"It could be that we're missing something; we'll see this week," Flick said. "There's intensity and quality in training. I see the team raising its level, and that's the most important thing. We have to work hard to maintain the level of last season."
The German tactician added: "The most important thing is the way we train." He also turned his attention to the challenges ahead, noting: "It's been a good test for us; we're already thinking about the debut against Elche. It's not an easy management; there are many players who have joined recently."
With Barcelona's LaLiga curtain-raiser against Elche looming, the coming week could prove pivotal both on and off the pitch. Flick must balance further integrating his new signings while Deco and the recruitment team attempt to finalise any remaining transfer business before the window closes.
