Barcelona teenager Xavi Espart shines in surprise midfield role against Basel
Barcelona's Xavi Espart has been building a reputation as one of the most exciting young talents in La Liga, and the 19-year-old's versatility was on full display during Sunday's pre-season friendly against FC Basel.
Espart, who emerged onto the first-team picture at Camp Nou last season, was afforded a starting berth by Hansi Flick against the Swiss side. However, rather than lining up in his usual position at right-back, the Spanish youth international was tested in a deep-lying midfield role — and he grabbed the opportunity with both hands.
In what was a true 4-3-3 shape rather than Flick's usual 4-2-3-1, Espart played as one of two number eights in front of single pivot Marc Bernal. The teenager looked completely at home in the middle of the park, demonstrating the natural instincts of a midfielder.
He was comfortable with the ball at his feet in central areas and looked accomplished at reading and attacking spaces. Espart provided a solid outlet option for Bernal in the buildup phase and always seemed to be in the right place at the right time — showcasing all of his positional awareness, technical excellence, passing range and vision.
Those of a Blaugrana persuasion were quick to make their excitement known online, with many supporters tipping Espart as a potential future star in the making.
The teenager's impressive showing also raises an interesting tactical question for Flick: with Eric Garcia capable of filling in at right-back, Espart's adaptability in midfield gives the Barcelona coach additional flexibility as he prepares for the new season — and potentially for the arrival of Rodri, which could see further tactical adjustments.
Barcelona continue their pre-season preparations with the Joan Gamper Trophy against Al Ahly on Wednesday, before kicking off their La Liga title defence away at Elche on Sunday.
