Arsenal overwhelm Manchester City 3-0 as Maresca admits there is work to do

Arsenal make a statement in Cardiff

Arsenal began the new campaign with a commanding 3-0 victory over Manchester City in the Community Shield, adding another trophy to their cabinet and delivering an early warning ahead of the Premier League season.

Martin Odegaard and Kai Havertz celebrate Arsenal's Community Shield victory

Riccardo Calafiori opened the scoring after only 23 seconds, the first opening-minute goal in a Community Shield match since Bobby Owen scored for Manchester City against West Bromwich Albion in 1968. Kai Havertz doubled Arsenal’s lead before half-time, and captain Martin Odegaard added a third shortly after the restart.

Calafiori strikes before City settle

Arsenal’s opener came from an aggressive, direct start. Gabriel found Odegaard between the lines, and the move continued through Christos Tzolis, Noni Madueke, Ben White and Myles Lewis-Skelly before Lewis-Skelly threaded a disguised pass through the City defence. Calafiori ran onto it and finished beyond Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Manchester City briefly threatened a response when David Raya saved Phil Foden’s curling effort, while Erling Haaland shot straight at the Arsenal goalkeeper from a promising position. But Arsenal remained the sharper side. Havertz’s downward header, assisted by a floated Odegaard delivery after Christos Tzolis had helped create the opening, gave Arsenal a two-goal advantage in the 28th minute.

Odegaard compounds City’s problems

City’s defensive uncertainty continued after the interval. In the 48th minute, Odegaard danced past Josko Gvardiol, sent Donnarumma the wrong way and calmly slotted home Arsenal’s third. The goal effectively ended the contest, with Enzo Maresca withdrawing several key players, including Haaland.

Arsenal could have added to the score. Raya stayed alert to deny Antoine Semenyo, while Bukayo Saka lifted a late opportunity over the crossbar. Jeremy Doku was replaced at half-time and was later seen with an ice pack strapped to his leg.

Maresca acknowledges City’s shortcomings

The defeat was a difficult introduction to competitive football for Maresca, who succeeded Pep Guardiola as City manager. City registered 12 attempts and five on target but produced only 0.8 expected goals, with Haaland and Foden struggling to influence the match.

“We have many things to work on,” Maresca told BBC Radio 5 Live. He said the goal conceded after 25 seconds “affected the game in that moment” but argued that City had created “three or four chances to score and draw the game” before Havertz’s goal.

“It’s just the beginning,” Maresca added. “The season’s just started, so there are many things we need to do better.” He said the team would reset, analyse the match and turn its focus to the Premier League opener against Bournemouth.

City’s midfield overhaul back in focus

The performance also intensified questions about City’s midfield. Elliott Anderson, the £116 million signing from Nottingham Forest, showed some promising passing early on but was substituted by the hour mark alongside Haaland. City’s planned reshaping of the position has included interest in Ayyoub Bouaddi and Enzo Fernandez, although Chelsea’s deadline for a £120 million offer for Fernandez passed without a bid.

Arsenal, by contrast, looked cohesive and tactically confident. Bruno Guimaraes made an assured first start, combining effectively with Odegaard and Lewis-Skelly, while Declan Rice returned from the bench without forcing the team into a more defensive approach. Tzolis was also influential, contributing two assists and helping Arsenal build from deeper areas.

The result is a significant confidence boost for Mikel Arteta and his squad, although Community Shield history offers a note of caution: only eight of the previous 34 winners in the Premier League era went on to win the league that season, and none of the last six did so.

For City, the defeat is an early setback rather than a final verdict. But the brittle defending, exposed midfield and lack of attacking sharpness gave Maresca a clear list of problems to address before the league campaign begins.
