Barcelona midfielder Fermín López has revealed the summer arrival at Spotify Camp Nou who has left him most impressed — and his answer is Anthony Gordon, the winger signed from Newcastle United during a busy transfer window for the Catalan giants.

Barcelona added several new high-profile names to Hansi Flick’s squad over the course of the summer transfer window. While the club ultimately failed to land the big-name new centre-forward they had been chasing, the likes of Rodri, Karim Adeyemi, Anthony Gordon and Gabriel Jesus all put pen to paper in Catalunya’s capital.

López singles out Gordon

With four new arrivals to assess, López was asked in an interview with Mundo Deportivo which of the quartet has surprised him most with the level of his abilities in training. The Spanish international pointed straight to the former Newcastle man, admitting that Gordon’s quality had largely flown under his radar before he joined the club.

“I already knew Rodri, so I wasn’t too surprised, but I’d say Gordon. We’ve played against Newcastle in the Champions League a couple of times, I think, but I hadn’t seen much of him. I haven’t watched many of their matches, and honestly, he surprised me a lot, and I think he’s a player who’s going to help us a great deal.”

Big things expected from the winger

López’s glowing assessment is a significant endorsement for one of Barcelona’s marquee summer additions. Although the Spain international had crossed paths with Gordon in European competition, he confessed he had not watched many of the Englishman’s matches — making the winger’s early impact on the training ground all the more striking.

With Barcelona boasting a strengthened attacking unit under Flick following the additions of Gordon, Rodri, Adeyemi and Jesus, López’s verdict suggests the club’s existing stars are quickly buying into the new talent — and that Gordon, in particular, is expected to play a major role in the months ahead.
