Raphinha will captain Barcelona in Wednesday’s Gamper Trophy meeting with Al Ahly, but Hansi Flick has stressed that the Brazilian’s status as first captain is not yet permanent.

Captaincy decision still to come

Flick told the club’s media that Raphinha, Eric Garcia and Pedri are currently the leading members of the captaincy group, with the final decision to be made by a vote once the squad is complete.

“I decided the captain, until we vote, because our team is not finished yet,” Flick said. “Until this happens, Rapha is the captain with Eric and Pedri.”

Raphinha will also address the supporters before the Gamper match. Flick added that Frenkie de Jong remains an important figure despite being unavailable through injury, while Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Ronald Araujo are also out.

Rodri and Cancelo move closer

Barcelona are also preparing to add Rodri and João Cancelo to the squad. Rodri has arrived in Barcelona ahead of a move from Manchester City and described the transfer as “a dream come true”. His deal is expected to be finalised after a medical.

Cancelo has returned to Barcelona after two loan spells and is set to sign a contract running until 2029. “I am where I want to be,” the Portuguese full-back said after arriving in the city.

The incoming duo would strengthen a squad still targeting another striker before the transfer window closes. Barcelona’s first team has meanwhile returned to training ahead of the Gamper, while Barça Atlètic secured a preseason win over L’Hospitalet and Barça Femení drew 2-2 with Manchester City Women.
