Chelsea tie down Cole Palmer with improved contract until 2034
Cole Palmer has signed a new Chelsea contract on improved terms that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2034, in a renewed show of faith from the club after his emergence as one of their key attacking players.
The England international, 24, was already under contract until 2033 but has been rewarded for his performances — and is also increasingly viewed as a dressing-room leader behind the scenes.
One of the longest deals in the Premier League
The renewal leaves Palmer on one of the longest contracts in the Premier League, with only Manchester City's Erling Haaland and Chelsea team-mates Joao Pedro and Geovany Quenda also contracted to 2034.
Palmer signed his previous contract only two years ago, having joined Chelsea in a £42.5m move from Manchester City in 2023. The new agreement is the latest in a series of extensions designed to reward both established and emerging players while maintaining the club's wage structure: Joao Pedro signed a new contract until 2034 in August, before Pedro Neto agreed a new six-year deal last month.
Back to his best after an injury-hit season
Palmer has scored four goals and provided two assists in seven matches this season — two goals and two assists in five Premier League appearances as of 10 October, according to a FotMob snapshot — and the new deal represents a reward for a return to form after a niggling groin issue hampered him throughout last season. He admitted at the time that he had played through the problem even though he "probably shouldn't have done".
His lack of availability ultimately led to his omission from England's World Cup squad over the summer, having previously sought specialist advice on whether surgery was required.
England withdrawal, Tuchel criticism and Alonso's defence
Palmer has played more minutes than any other Chelsea player this season, but his fitness record continues to shape his international career. Having been recalled by Thomas Tuchel, he withdrew from the England squad days later with a minor muscle injury — as reported on 21 September — and then missed the recent international break as well, prompting the England head coach to say he "misses too many opportunities".
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has consistently defended his player. According to reporting published on 10 October, Alonso insisted Palmer was right to withdraw from international duty amid criticism from Tuchel, and the Spaniard again stressed his forward's commitment to his country ahead of Chelsea's next fixture.
"Absolutely. He's committed, but he needs to be fully fit to play. And when he's fully fit, he will enjoy his minutes. We need him in that moment. The club and the national team."
"He trained over the past week and has been feeling better, but we didn't want to rush him."
Alonso confirmed Palmer is expected to be available for Saturday's game against Bournemouth.
Rogers reunion and Chelsea's early-season position
On the pitch, Palmer has developed a strong understanding with Brazil forward Joao Pedro this season, while also rekindling his partnership with his "best friend in football", Morgan Rogers, during the early stages of Alonso's reign as manager. Palmer was one of the few people privy to Chelsea's negotiations to sign Rogers from Aston Villa for a club-record £117m fee this summer.
Alonso's side sit 10th in the table after five matches, having conceded 12 goals, and will hope their newly committed talisman can help spark an improvement when they face Bournemouth on Saturday.
Additional reporting based on Sky Sports and BBC coverage of Palmer's September withdrawal from the England squad and Alonso's subsequent defence of the decision, published on 21 September and 10 October respectively.
