Raphinha to lead Barcelona into a new era
Barcelona are set to name Raphinha as the club's first captain for the 2026-27 La Liga season, with the Brazilian winger poised to take on the most senior leadership role at the Camp Nou.
The decision, first reported by ESPN Brasil and relayed by Diario Sport, marks a significant shift in the dressing room hierarchy at the Catalan club. As the Spanish outlet put it: “Raphinha will wear the captain’s armband for the Blaugrana team during the 2026/27 season, a choice that changes the scenario that had been drawn up in recent weeks and once again demonstrates the enormous influence the Brazilian has acquired within the dressing room.”
ESPN Brasil adds that the official announcement “will be made soon by Barcelona, who are still finalizing the last marketing materials for the statement.” The role of captain is traditionally decided by a dressing room vote between the players, and it appears Raphinha has been handed the responsibility for the upcoming campaign.
A summer of upheaval in the dressing room
The captaincy situation has garnered widespread attention in Barcelona this summer, following a significant outflux of experience and leadership. Both Marc-André ter Stegen and Ronald Araújo were granted loan exits, while Robert Lewandowski has also moved on. The Blaugrana’s new captain will, in turn, have plenty of responsibility on his shoulders this season.
Raphinha was already among the club’s captains but has now risen to the top of the list. He has been a key player for Barcelona throughout Hansi Flick’s time in charge and shares a close bond with the German coach.
De Jong’s injury opens the door
Frenkie de Jong had previously been tipped to take over the armband, but after suffering a fresh long-term injury setback, the Dutchman will seemingly be forced to make do with the role of vice-captain.
Raphinha is expected to be joined in the captaincy group by several other players. Frenkie de Jong and Pedri are set to continue in their roles and could be joined by Eric Garcia and Gavi.
