Jules Kounde has reportedly been told that he is no longer Barcelona’s first-choice right-back, with Eric Garcia now ahead of him in Hansi Flick’s plans for the position.

According to Catalunya Radio, Flick has spoken to Kounde about the coming campaign and informed him that Eric Garcia is his No. 1 option at right-back. Kounde moved from central defence into the role during his Barcelona career, but he lost his place to Garcia toward the end of last season.

Kounde faces competition in both positions

The France international has reportedly been told that he is more likely to feature at centre-back this season. However, he is not currently first choice there either, with Pau Cubarsi and Gerard Martin viewed as the preferred pairing and Andreas Christensen listed as another alternative.

The latest development could intensify the long-running speculation surrounding Kounde’s Barcelona future. Reports of a possible departure have persisted throughout the summer, although the defender attempted to dismiss the possibility of leaving while on international duty.

“I have a contract until 2030. In my mind, that’s quite clear,” Kounde said in June. “With the French national team, those things come second. I’m focused on the competition until further notice. I’m at Barça and I hope to stay there.”

With roughly a week remaining in the transfer window, Kounde’s position at Barcelona is once again under scrutiny. The reported change in the defensive pecking order may become a key factor in determining whether he remains at the club or considers his options before the window closes.
