Barcelona are bracing for a significant shake-up in their captains group following the departures of Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Ronald Araujo this summer.

Ter Stegen, who served as Barcelona's first captain last season, has joined Ajax on loan for the 2026-27 campaign. Meanwhile, Araujo has also agreed to a temporary move away from Camp Nou, signing for Premier League side Liverpool.

The double departure leaves two spots open in Hansi Flick's leadership group. Last season, the captains circle comprised Ter Stegen, Araujo, Frenkie de Jong, Raphinha, and Pedri.

With De Jong currently sidelined through injury, Raphinha is expected to begin the new season wearing the captain's armband. The Brazilian winger has grown into a key figure at the club and now appears primed to take on greater leadership responsibilities.

Garcia and Gavi lead the candidates

According to Mundo Deportivo, Eric Garcia and Gavi are the leading contenders to step into the vacated captaincy roles.

Flick has previously admitted that Garcia could one day become a club captain, signalling the manager's faith in the defender's leadership qualities. Gavi, meanwhile, has already worn the armband on several occasions, with his passion and combative spirit making him a natural fit for a leadership position despite his young age.

The coming weeks are likely to see Flick finalise his new-look captains group as Barcelona prepare for the new campaign with a refreshed leadership core.
