Kompany blames Bayern’s ‘stupid’ errors after Viking snatch 3-3 draw
Bayern let another lead slip after early errors
Vincent Kompany blamed Bayern Munich’s own mistakes after they were held to a 3-3 draw by Norwegian side Viking in the Champions League on Tuesday, days after drawing 2-2 with Augsburg in the Bundesliga.
Bayern fell behind after just one minute and 11 seconds, when Gianni Stensness headed Viking in front. Peter Christiansen doubled the home side’s advantage before Harry Kane scored twice and Luis Diaz put Bayern ahead. The visitors were denied the win by Herman Haugen’s late equaliser, which came after Michael Olise was sent off for a second bookable offence.

‘We’re causing these situations ourselves’
“It’s our own fault,” Kompany said, according to Bayern’s website. He described his team as dominant but said players were making lapses in concentration and failing to make smart decisions at key moments.
Kompany pointed to the opening goal and the red card as avoidable. Bayern, he said, might have chosen a longer option instead of playing out from a corner, while Olise’s foul on Henrik Heggheim deep in Viking territory was “obviously stupid”.
“At the moment, it feels like every chance for the opponents leads to a goal. That’s no excuse, though, because we’re causing these situations ourselves.”
The Bayern coach said he did not see a lack of energy or commitment from his players, but acknowledged that individual errors were making it difficult to win despite stretches of strong play.
Kimmich says Bayern are below their target
Captain Joshua Kimmich also said Bayern were making too many individual mistakes. He insisted the issue was not effort, while conceding that the team was “a bit away from where we want to be” after dropping points in consecutive matches.
The result marked only the second time in Bayern’s last 10 Champions League league-phase matches that they had failed to win, a run in which they had recorded eight victories and one defeat before the draw. The report also noted that Bayern had never won away in the Champions League or European Cup after falling two or more goals behind; Tuesday’s match was their 38th such occasion.
Bayern are due to return to Bundesliga action against RB Leipzig on Saturday, before their next Champions League match against Arsenal on October 20.
