Calvert-Lewin rescues Leeds as Manchester United's winless run hits six and Carrick pressure builds

Leeds United 1-1 Manchester United: Carrick's men pegged back again

Manchester United failed to ease the pressure on Michael Carrick as their winless run stretched to six matches in all competitions with a 1-1 draw at Leeds United on Sunday afternoon.

Bryan Mbeumo fired the visitors in front in the first half, but Dominic Calvert-Lewin levelled six minutes after the interval to deny Carrick a morale-boosting victory at Elland Road and leave the Red Devils still searching for a second league win of the campaign.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin celebrates his equaliser for Leeds United against Manchester United

United's woeful run continues

United have still not tasted victory since beating Sabah in their Champions League opener in early September, and have now gone five Premier League matches without a win. Their sole league success of 2026-27 came at the end of August, against Ipswich.

Carrick's side lined up in an unfamiliar 3-4-3, a lesser-seen configuration for the 45-year-old that echoed the system used by his predecessor, Ruben Amorim. Bruno Fernandes was fielded as the nominal central forward, curtailing the captain's ability to dictate from midfield, though he was handed a free role.

Elland Road was the scene of Amorim's last stand, after the Portuguese reacted to January's 1-1 draw at the ground by demanding his recruitment colleagues "do their job" — a result that saw him sacked two days later. Carrick avoids a similar fate for now, but the question of how long his reprieve lasts hangs heavy, with a Champions League trip to Como on Wednesday already shaping up as the next must-win fixture.

Martínez returns after apology

Five days after a scathing diatribe aimed at director of football Jason Wilcox over the club's recruitment, Lisandro Martínez was selected by Carrick, the defender's Thursday apology enough to clear the way. His afternoon ended at half-time, however, with Noussair Mazraoui introduced in his place.

Daniel Farke's Leeds, unchanged for a fifth consecutive game, were roared on by a febrile home crowd who delighted in Martínez's first contribution — a stray pass hoofed out of play.

Chances at both ends

The contest was blood and thunderous but lacked regular goalmouth incident in its opening exchanges. Leeds almost drew first blood when Nico Elvedi's downward header from an Anton Stach free-kick was pushed away by Senne Lammens, before United passed up an even bigger chance as Mbeumo headed Youri Tielemans' searching cross wide at close range.

Mbeumo would make no mistake when the same player provided a pinpoint, low delivery from the right flank in the 35th minute, stretching to flick the ball into the bottom-left corner and stun the home support.

Leeds had half chances before the interval — Calvert-Lewin unable to trouble Lammens with a header and James Justin failing to get enough power behind a shot after a marauding run — while Fernandes was booked for scything down Tarik Muharemovic after a clumsy touch. Gabriel Gudmundsson was also shown a yellow card for clipping Andrey Santos.

Calvert-Lewin strikes again

The hosts' pressure paid dividends six minutes into the second half. When Mazraoui's header sent Jayden Bogle's cross out for a corner on the right, Stach swung it in and Muharemovic's flick found Calvert-Lewin, who outmuscled Mbeumo and crashed the ball home.

Action from Manchester United's Premier League draw with Leeds United at Elland Road

With the crowd propelling them forward, Leeds pinned back Carrick's side. Ao Tanaka boomed a volley just over, while Carlos Baleba's unconvincing long-range effort summed up United's lack of ideas. Fernandes went close with a turn and shot that spun narrowly wide, but he followed that with a weak attempt James Trafford clutched simply.

On 73 minutes Farke took off Noah Okafor for Lukas Nmecha and Carrick removed Baleba for Mason Mount, with Matheus Cunha also introduced, but none of the changes could spark a winner.

Leeds nearly won it amid a late goalmouth scramble, with Stach wasting arguably their clearest opportunity after Diogo Dalot headed the ball straight to him just inside the United area, and Nmecha also going close.

The numbers behind the stalemate

Carrick may ultimately be relieved to leave Yorkshire with a point, with Leeds edging the expected goals tally 1.44 to 0.91 — 1.19 of the hosts' total coming in the second half.

Mbeumo's strike continued a theme of the campaign: three of his four Premier League goals this term have put United 1-0 up, with only Erling Haaland (four) boasting more such goals this season. On each of the last three occasions the Cameroonian has given them the lead, however, the Red Devils have gone on to draw — also against Everton and Tottenham.

When Leeds needed a goal, it was no surprise to see Calvert-Lewin step up. He has now scored in six of his last seven home Premier League games, with seven goals in that run, and boasts eight Premier League goals since the start of April, a tally bettered only by Haaland (13) in that span.

Since Calvert-Lewin's first home game for Leeds last season, his 12 Premier League goals at Elland Road are the third-most scored by any player at a particular venue, behind only Haaland at the Etihad Stadium (19) and Igor Thiago at the Gtech Community Stadium (14).
