Barcelona star Rodri has moved to clear the air after footage emerged of him brutally criticizing Valencia during the Catalan club's 5-0 demolition job at Mestalla this past weekend.

The summer arrival in Catalunya's capital was caught by match cameras on the bench delivering a stinging assessment of Carlos Corberán's side during an exchange with teammate Pau Cubarsí, comments that were never intended to be made public.

Rodri was overheard saying: "They're really weak. They're really weak, man. Really bad. They're terrible, they're terrible. How did Valencia finish last year? You know, they haven't even crossed the halfway line in the second half."

After the remarks sparked heavy backlash from all associated with Valencia, the 30-year-old World Cup winner fronted the media following Barcelona's Champions League victory over Feyenoord on Wednesday and was quick to set the record straight.

"Before I begin, I would like to apologize to everyone who may have been offended: Valencia supporters, fans, players, anyone who may have felt offended by my words," Rodri said. "I have already spoken with my friend and teammate José Gayà, to whom I have apologized, as well as to the entire squad. I also want to make it clear that it was an expression of surprise; anyone who watches the video can see that."

He continued: "At no point did I intend to mock or take any team's misfortunes out of context; quite the opposite. We all want Valencia, in my case, to return to its rightful place, to our league, where the best clubs are. And that's all I wanted to say."

Rodri, who was hauled off by manager Hansi Flick during the Mestalla romp, also reflected on Barcelona's strong start to the campaign under the German coach. "We know the difficulty of every match. This team is hungry, from the outside they projected this and now that I'm inside I see it, that's why I'm here," he added.

Barcelona's win over Feyenoord continued their perfect start to the season, and they return to La Liga action this weekend against Levante as they look to maintain their momentum.
