Everton up to fifth on second straight own-goal gift as Codina's late deflection sinks West Ham
Six points, zero goals — Everton's remarkable start
How do you register six points without scoring a single goal? Everton completed that remarkable feat on Saturday when a late winner at West Ham — an own goal from the defender Laia Codina — gave them all three points in Dagenham.
It was the second time in as many weeks that a touch from their opponent handed Everton a victory, but it will not matter to Scott Phelan's side, who sit pretty in fifth place in the table.
It was an even affair for the most part, with both setups nullifying the other. The Toffees looked defensively resilient, handling the threat of Kelly Gago and Viviane Asseyi comfortably, while West Ham did the same to the visitors' attack. Both teams had an equal share of possession, similar expected-goals figures and registered just three shots on target apiece.
Everton's ability to finish strongly proved the difference. Phelan turned to his bench and his substitutes were able to ratchet up the pressure, with Yuka Momiki providing the delivery that led to the decisive winner.
