Harry Kane hits 100 Bundesliga goals in record 98 games as Bayern put seven past Union Berlin
A century of goals, and a night to remember
It was only a matter of time — and it was probably always going to happen against an ailing Union Berlin, enduring a horrible start to the season — but Harry Kane reached 100 Bundesliga goals on Friday night in his 98th game, so much faster than anyone in the history of the league.
His double was almost a footnote on a night when Michael Olise scored a dazzling hat-trick, with Jamal Musiala and Ismaël Saibari also netting their first league goals of the season in a 7-0 shellacking. It was a good start to the club's traditional celebration of Oktoberfest weekend, and a result that kept Bayern perfectly in touch with Borussia Dortmund at the top of the table on a 12-point haul after four matchdays.
There was poignancy amid the goals too. Bayern later mourned Peter Hermann, Jupp Heynckes' popular assistant in the 2013 treble-winning season, who passed away on Saturday at the age of 73. Hermann was also emotionally commemorated at Leverkusen before kick-off on Sunday, having played in their 1979 promotion-winning team and later served as assistant to Klaus Toppmöller at the helm of the celebrated 2002 Champions League finalists.
The night's fireworks, though, belonged to Kane, who continues to rewrite the Bundesliga record books with a scoring rate no marksman has ever matched — reaching a century of goals faster than any player in the competition's storied history.
