Bournemouth stun 10-man Milan 3-0 as Maignan red card derails Rossoneri

A night to remember on the south coast

This was a momentous night in Bournemouth's history. Marco Rose's side never relinquished control against a Milan team that, in the words of the Guardian's match report, resembled holograms for much of the evening. Goals from Justin Kluivert and Marcus Tavernier from the penalty spot, plus a late free-kick from Amine Adli, gave the Cherries a 3-0 win and kept their perfect Europa League record intact.

Bournemouth, who sit 15th in the Premier League, were the pre-match favourites against one of the most decorated clubs in Serie A, and they made the most of it in driving rain.

Early penalty and a Maignan meltdown

Milan's troubles began within eight minutes. Koni De Winter deflected a Evanilson header wide with his arm, and VAR spotted the infringement. Kluivert, who had earlier been involved in a close call himself, converted the spot-kick, following in the footsteps of his father Patrick, a former Milan striker.

Milan could not clear their lines before the half-hour, and the match turned decisively on the resulting corner. Goalkeeper Mike Maignan, who had just clawed a James Hill deflection wide, shoved Tyler Adams in the face. The referee showed Maignan a straight red card and awarded a penalty. Tavernier stepped up, unfazed by a lengthy wait, and converted to make it 2-0 before half-time. Lorenzo Torriani, who replaced Maignan, was quickly beaten.

Milan 'self-destructed dramatically', and the visitors could not cope with Bournemouth's intensity for the rest of the match.

Adli seals it late

Bournemouth were not forced to rely on the elements for the rest of the game. Fikayo Tomori was booked for a foul on Evanilson when Milan's substitute Lewis Cook was clean through, and Ruben Amorim's side struggled to create genuine chances, with Adrien Rabiot's introduction at half-time doing little to change the picture. Adli, a substitute, curled a free-kick from 22 yards around a misplaced wall in the 84th minute to make it 3-0. Torriani later denied Bournemouth a fourth with a strong save from Rayan.

Amorim faces questions ahead of Manchester United trip

For Amorim, the return to Britain was an abject one. His side now travel to face Bournemouth's opponents' counterparts in the Premier League context, with Manchester United set to face Bournemouth on Sunday. Bournemouth's first European campaign continues to gather pace, while Milan must regroup after a disastrous evening.
