Lisandro Martinez's Manchester United Future in Doubt After Public Outburst at Club Hierarchy

Old Trafford Standoff: Martinez's Contract Call Looming

Lisandro Martinez's Manchester United future has been called into question following his extraordinary public criticism of the club's hierarchy, with real doubts now surrounding whether the Argentine defender's contract will be extended when it expires next summer.

United hold the formal option to prolong the 28-year-old's stay by a further year, but Sky Sports News reports the club has yet to decide whether to trigger it — and there are genuine reservations about doing so after his outburst.

Speaking in the aftermath of United's 2-0 Champions League defeat at Atletico Madrid, Martinez took aim at the club's recruitment, saying: "I expect more from our technical director (meaning director of football, Jason Wilcox). We expect more from the top, from upstairs, to bring in more players to compete."

Anger and Bafflement Inside the Club

Sky Sports News has been told there is anger and bemusement at what Martinez said — both in the United boardroom and inside the dressing room. At least one other player challenged him over the comments as the squad boarded the plane back to Manchester, with the implication that Martinez does not believe his team-mates are good enough to compete having landed badly among the group.

United's bosses have yet to decide whether to discipline the defender for his remarks. The club is understood to be aware it must handle the situation carefully, with Martinez remaining a key part of Michael Carrick's squad.

A Long-Held Desire to Leave

Martinez has been keen on a move away from Old Trafford for some time. In the summer, he pushed for a switch to Atletico Madrid — the side that beat United in the Champions League — to join his close friend and international team-mate Cristian Romero, who left Tottenham for Spain. No suitable bid arrived for United to consider.

It is not the first time Martinez has made explosive comments about his employers. While at Ajax in 2022, having again wanted a move, he labelled the club's sporting director Gerry Hamstra a "nobody".

Defence Already Stretched to Breaking Point

Any growing rift would cause serious problems for a United defence already blighted by injury and suspension. Ayden Heaven started out of position at left-back against Atletico, while Leny Yoro — sent off at the Metropolitano Stadium — now faces a one-game European ban.

Harry Maguire, 33, is having his game-time managed to avoid overloading, Luke Shaw is out injured with a non-specified return date, and the alternative options at left-back, Patrick Dorgu and Noussair Mazraoui, are also absent with fitness issues.

United intend to focus on revamping their defence in the next transfer windows and are looking at new centre-backs as well as left-backs.

The Financial Reality Behind United's Spending

Sky Sports News' Rob Dorsett explained why United cannot simply spend their way out of trouble: "Man Utd aren't the powerhouse of world football they once were. Yes, they made record revenues of £678m, but still made a pre-tax loss of £47m and are paying interest on loans of £70m."

"We know they've got huge debts to the Glazers. They don't have huge amounts to spend that Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea do, for example."

Dorsett noted the club's transfer strategy has moved position by position, with the midfield the focus this summer because Kobbie Mainoo was the only senior midfielder left once Casemiro departed. All three midfielders signed — at a cost of £156m — started against Atletico.

On the left-back situation, Dorsett added: "A lot of fans have been asking how they can get through this season with Luke Shaw as their only senior left-back. It's a fair argument. Man Utd will come back and say they wouldn't spend money on a stopgap when they're going to sign a new left-back in the summer... They couldn't afford Myles Lewis-Skelly or Lewis Hall, who are their real targets in that position."

He concluded: "There's a jarring at the moment between Man Utd's financial reality and their strategy going forward. They won't listen to the noise from supporters, but it doesn't change the fact they are quite understandably frustrated some of their rivals are going out and spending big when they just cannot do that right now."
