Chelsea’s Lexi Potter emerges as England’s next midfield breakthrough star

Potter’s Chelsea rise puts England call-up in focus

Lexi Potter’s rapid development has made her one of the most discussed names ahead of England manager Sarina Wiegman’s latest squad announcement. The 20-year-old Chelsea midfielder has impressed throughout the opening weeks of the Women’s Super League and strengthened her case with a composed performance in Chelsea’s 1-0 win over Arsenal.

Potter has started three of Chelsea’s four league matches this season, operating in the number-six role alongside England midfielder Keira Walsh. Her defensive positioning has allowed Walsh to move further forward, while Potter has shown the composure and passing range required to play out under pressure.

A mature performance against Arsenal

The Arsenal victory was the latest evidence that Potter can perform on major occasions. She had already delivered steady displays against Manchester United and Birmingham City, scoring in Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Birmingham. Against Arsenal, she helped the reigning league leaders secure a third successive clean sheet.

Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor praised Potter’s consistency and said the midfielder had demonstrated that she could reproduce her best form in a high-profile match. The partnership with Walsh has also begun to influence Chelsea’s attacking play: Walsh’s saved effort against Arsenal eventually fell to Alyssa Thompson, who scored the winner.

Potter’s progress follows her breakthrough last season, when she scored the winner on her first WSL start against Brighton. She had previously spent two years on loan at Crystal Palace, gaining regular first-team experience before returning to Chelsea.

‘A special player’

Former England striker Ellen White described Potter as “a special player” and highlighted a moment against Arsenal when the midfielder escaped pressure from three opponents with a clever pass around the corner to Ellie Carpenter.

“Chelsea have spent a lot of money on players in that team but she has grabbed the opportunity,” White said. “She is growing game by game and has great physicality.”

Potter’s numbers underline that impression. She has recorded a 93% passing accuracy in the WSL, ranks highly among her Chelsea team-mates for tackles and interceptions, and has made 21 recoveries across 207 minutes. Chelsea have not conceded while she has been on the pitch in the league this season.

Could Potter become Walsh’s successor?

Potter’s style has naturally invited comparisons with Walsh, who has been England’s first-choice number six for years and has won more than 100 caps. While Walsh remains central to the Lionesses, Potter’s emergence offers England the prospect of both a dependable understudy and a potentially effective midfield partner.

Lucy Bronze said Potter had impressed her since her earliest days at Chelsea and that learning from Walsh was helping the youngster develop. “If England have another Keira Walsh, it puts us in a very good position,” Bronze said.

Whether Potter receives her first senior call-up remains Wiegman’s decision, but the Chelsea midfielder has already made a strong argument. Her next opportunity to push for international recognition will come as Chelsea seek to build on their unbeaten start and Potter continues to establish herself at the highest level.
