Urbig steps up as Bayern return to winning ways

FC Bayern Munich returned to winning ways in emphatic fashion with a 6-1 victory over RB Leipzig at the Allianz Arena, with 23-year-old goalkeeper Jonas Urbig handed his first home start of the season in place of the injured Manuel Neuer.

"I'll be there whenever I'm needed"

Urbig, who enjoyed a far quieter evening than the Champions League thriller in Viking, spoke afterwards about the competition he faces with the Bayern captain.

“I try to go into games with a positive emotion. I feel very good,” Urbig said after his first Allianz Arena game of the season. “We want to be ready so the coach has the possibility to decide who starts every time. I hope Manu (Neuer) will come back soon. I'll be there whenever I'm needed.”

On the team's performance, the young keeper added: “We had a convincing performance from start to finish. It was a lot of fun on the pitch today. The ease to score goals, which was a bit missing in recent games, was there again today. Lucho (Diaz) scored three, Harry doesn't stop scoring goals.”

Neuer sidelined after Augsburg draw

Neuer, 40, is absent due to a minor injury. The veteran did not train in the days before the Leipzig clash, and head coach Vincent Kompany admitted on 16 October 2026 that his availability would “go down to the wire” against Leipzig, with Jamal Musiala the only other player ruled out.

The injury came on the back of a frustrating 2-2 draw at Augsburg, where Neuer's clearance was charged down by Robin Fellhauer, who scored after just 8.4 seconds — the fastest goal in Bundesliga history — on 12 October 2026.

Arsenal next for Urbig?

Urbig could now keep his place between the posts when Bayern face Arsenal in the Champions League on Wednesday, with Neuer's return timeline still uncertain.
