Hull City Stun Manchester United 2-0 on Dream Premier League Return as Carrick Urges Patience

Hull Announce Their Premier League Return in Style

Newly promoted Hull City stunned Manchester United in their Premier League opener, scoring twice in a scintillating first-half performance to seal a 2-0 victory at MKM Stadium and mark their return to the top flight with a statement win.

The Tigers, back in the Premier League for the first time since the 2016-17 season, became the first sixth-placed Championship team to be promoted since Blackpool in 2010. They wasted no time in showing they belong, never having beaten United in the competition before — going 10 games without a victory (D2 L8) — but ending that barren run in emphatic fashion under manager Sergej Jakirovic.

Hull City celebrate scoring against Manchester United

First-Half Fireworks

Hull gave United an early warning when Lewie Coyle sent a teasing cross to the far post, and Noussair Mazraoui arrived just ahead of Oli McBurnie. At the other end, Bryan Mbeumo put his laces through a lovely volley, with Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis getting a strong hand behind it.

Ryan Giles' cross then caught out United's backline, but Senne Lammens — who had already made a sharp stop to deny McBurnie — was alert to tip it over the bar. Hull profited from the resulting corner. Lammens pushed McBurnie's stretching back-post shot against the post off the line, but Semi Ajayi pounced on the loose ball to fire in a 17th-minute opener.

Hull continued to cause problems from set-pieces, and Nobel Mendy doubled the lead after 38 minutes, heading in Regan Slater's free-kick delivery. By scoring twice before the break, Hull managed more goals against United in the first half of this match than they had across their previous five Premier League meetings combined (one).

United Unable to Find a Way Back

Hull continued to keep United at bay after the interval, despite Marcus Rashford — playing for the first time since late 2024 — causing plenty of problems with his pace. But it was the Tigers who still looked the bigger threat, with Mohamed Belloumi bending a shot over the crossbar after cutting inside from the right and Cody Drameh fizzing a low effort just wide.

Mbeumo raced in behind after Cunha had carved open Hull's backline, but he could only fire at Tzolakis, who marked his Hull debut with a clean sheet. United racked up 21 shots with five on target and accumulated 1.81 expected goals (xG), but Tzolakis was only seriously troubled on a couple of occasions.

Every time Hull have held a 2+ goal lead at half-time, they have gone on to win (five occasions), and this was exactly the confidence boost they needed to start the season.

Michael Carrick reacts on the touchline

Carrick: One Game Doesn't Change Everything

Manchester United's Premier League season began on a deeply disappointing note, and the statistics make grim reading for the Red Devils. United have lost their opening Premier League game in four of the last seven seasons (W3), while it is the first time in their league history they have lost to a newly promoted side on MD1 (P14, W10 D3 L1). They have also now failed to score on MD1 in back-to-back seasons despite having a combined 43 shots across those two matches (22 against Arsenal in 2025 and 21 against Hull).

But Michael Carrick, who oversaw a largely positive pre-season ahead of his first full campaign in permanent charge, is not panicking despite the early setback.

"We have a bit to improve on; it was never going to be perfect," Carrick told TNT Sports. "Going behind makes it more difficult, against a promoted team at home, we can't give them much, and they had opportunities; we're disappointed, but it won't knock us."

"It's for us to improve during the week and keep getting stronger as a group, and we have a lot to learn from it. Two goals is frustrating anyway; they decide the game, and there's things to improve on. One game doesn't change the direction of everything. It doesn't change the direction of the football club."

Set-Piece Woes Continue

Since Carrick's first game back in charge of United, only four teams have conceded more Premier League goals from corners than the Red Devils (six). They were all at sea for the corner that led to the first goal, while Slater's delivery from the free-kick that led to the second took United's defenders completely out of the game.

United captain Bruno Fernandes echoed his manager's sentiment while acknowledging the costly defensive lapses.

"We know in the Premier League these types of away grounds are difficult to play against," Fernandes told TNT Sports. "You need to match their intensity and aggression. The two set pieces ended up costing us the game. We understand the frustration; every season at the start we want to compete and win every game, but we need the fans on our side, and to believe in ourselves."
