Hansi Flick Confirms Barcelona's Provisional Captains and Shuts Down Frenkie de Jong Rift Speculation
Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has addressed key squad developments in Catalunya, officially unveiling a provisional three-man captaincy group while firmly shutting down rumours of a rift with midfielder Frenkie de Jong.
The Blaugrana leadership structure underwent a major shakeup this summer following the departures of established squad leaders Marc-André ter Stegen and Ronald Araújo. With next-in-line leader Frenkie de Jong sidelined due to a serious knee injury, Flick and his coaching staff have stepped in to establish clarity over the armband ahead of the new campaign.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Flick explained that due to De Jong's absence and potential transfer activity before the window shuts, the team will hold a formal squad-wide vote at a later date. In the interim, a temporary hierarchy has been established.
Barcelona's three provisional captains in order of the pecking order are Raphinha, Pedri, and Eric García.
Flick Dismisses Frenkie de Jong Tension
Flick also took the opportunity to dispel widespread speculation regarding his personal and professional relationship with Frenkie de Jong. The Dutch international sustained a severe knee injury during his international campaign, which ruled him out for the opening months of the season and reportedly caused frustration behind the scenes in Barcelona.
Addressing the murmurs of tension directly, Flick insisted his connection with the 29-year-old midfielder remains strong.
“My relationship with Frenkie is very good,” Flick stated. “He’s always very committed and a professional player, and we have an excellent relationship. I talk to him all the time, especially about what’s happening around the team and also about the next match. We talk a lot. For me, he’s an important player because he has a lot of potential to offer the team, and that’s what I want to see from him.”
With temporary leaders now in place and internal backing reaffirmed for key personnel, Flick's Barcelona will look to maintain momentum into their upcoming domestic fixtures.
