Newcastle sign Amar Dedic but still need midfield leadership before deadline

Dedic arrives as Newcastle seek experience

Newcastle United have agreed a deal worth approximately £30 million to sign Amar Dedic from Benfica. The 23-year-old right-back completed his medical and could start the Premier League opener because Tino Livramento is returning from injury and Newcastle lack full-back depth.

Dedic can operate on either flank and has Champions League experience. His arrival is Newcastle’s sixth signing of the summer, but manager Matthias Jaissle still wants an experienced midfielder to guide a young squad after the sale of Bruno Guimaraes.

Moves for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Joao Palhinha have not advanced. Carlos Baleba and Lucas Bergvall have been discussed, although Newcastle are unsure whether either would provide the immediate leadership required. Christopher Nkunku is also under consideration as a versatile attacking option.

Lewis Hall is not for sale. Nick Pope could leave after being omitted from Jaissle’s squads, while Joe Willock and possibly Jacob Murphy are expected to attract offers.

Activity continues across Europe

Liverpool remain in talks with Paris Saint-Germain over Bradley Barcola, although PSG’s valuation of around £145 million is too high. Tottenham continue to monitor Cody Gakpo and Savinho but have yet to add a forward, while Cristian Romero has joined Atletico Madrid and Djed Spence has moved to Inter.

Manchester City still want Enzo Fernandez despite Chelsea’s expired deadline and are unwilling to pay more than £120 million. City are also planning for the departures of Rodri, Tijjani Reijnders and potentially Savinho, while Ayyoub Bouaddi remains a midfield target and Jeremy Doku has signed a new contract through 2031.

Barcelona have sold Ferran Torres to Paris Saint-Germain for €50 million and agreed to sign Rodri from Manchester City for an initial €60 million, potentially rising to €76.5 million. Their remaining priority is a centre-forward, with Julian Alvarez still the preferred target. Joao Cancelo has joined as a free agent.

Real Madrid have decided to keep Endrick rather than loan him to Aston Villa or Roma. The decision will be reviewed in January if his playing time is limited. Madrid want a centre-back and midfielder but have indicated that a sale must precede another signing.
