Barcelona rule out Cristian Romero as Atlético Madrid close in on €40m deal

Board and Hansi Flick step back from Romero pursuit

Barcelona have opted not to pursue a move for Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Cristian Romero this summer, leaving the door open for La Liga rivals Atlético Madrid to advance on a deal for the Argentine defender.

Romero has been a prominent name in the Spanish media throughout the window after reports emerged that the 28-year-old intended to leave Tottenham. Both Barcelona and Atlético were quickly linked with his signature, with interest in Barcelona intensifying following Ronald Araújo’s recent departure to Liverpool.

The links had pointed to a potential World Cup-winning partnership alongside Pau Cubarsí at the Camp Nou, but the move has now collapsed.

Atlético agree deal for Simeone compatriot

According to a host of sources over the last 24 hours, Romero is instead set to join Atlético Madrid, with the club agreeing to pay a sum in the region of €40 million for the defender.

Market insider Fabrizio Romano revealed the decision comes after the Barcelona board, in conjunction with head coach Hansi Flick, ‘decided against the move’.

The development hands Diego Simeone a fellow Argentine at the Metropolitano as Atlético beat Barcelona to the defensive signing.
