Leipzig chief Marcel Schäfer brands 6-1 Bayern Munich mauling 'a complete failure in every department'

'Outclassed in every department': Schäfer tears into Leipzig

RB Leipzig sporting director Marcel Schäfer has described Saturday evening's 6-1 Bundesliga defeat away at Bayern Munich as a complete failure in every area of the game, warning that the club faces serious questions after another damaging away performance under head coach Martín Demichelis.

"We were completely outclassed in every department," Schäfer told Sky Germany after the full-time whistle. "It was a complete failure on our part in every respect, and that's why the result is what it is. Unfortunately, we have to be very self-critical about that and address it in no uncertain terms."

RB Leipzig players during a Bundesliga match

Leipzig travelled to the Allianz Arena on the back of last weekend's emphatic 6-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt, but any hope of building on that result vanished inside half an hour as Bayern raced into a three-goal lead within 34 minutes.

Díaz hat-trick dismantles the visitors

Luis Díaz opened the scoring in the 12th minute, with Aleksandar Pavlović and Michael Olise then extending Bayern's advantage as Leipzig offered virtually no attacking resistance and were overwhelmed by the hosts' intensity.

Demichelis attempted to reorganise at the interval, but the changes did little to stem the tide. Díaz struck again just two minutes after the restart, and Harry Kane added Bayern's fifth in the 53rd minute. The Colombian then completed his hat-trick before substitute Andrija Maksimović grabbed Leipzig's consolation goal in stoppage time.

Schäfer acknowledged that losing away to Bayern is hardly unprecedented, but stressed that the manner of the defeat fell far below the standards expected at the Red Bull Arena.

"That's not our standard," he said. "We're going to have to talk about that very seriously."

Klostermann selection questioned as Schäfer spreads the blame

The sporting director was reluctant to single out individuals despite scrutiny of Demichelis' surprising defensive selection. Veteran Lukas Klostermann, who had not started a competitive match since April, was unexpectedly deployed at right-back and struggled badly against Díaz and Bayern's attacking combinations before being replaced by Benjamin Henrichs on the hour.

Schäfer confirmed he had been informed of Demichelis' decision on Friday, but insisted responsibility for the defeat extended well beyond one player.

A deepening Bayern hoodoo

Saturday's result continued a deeply concerning sequence against the German record champions. Leipzig have now conceded a staggering 25 goals in their last six meetings with Bayern across all competitions, a run that includes August's Telekom Cup friendly.

The sequence began with a 3-3 Bundesliga draw in May 2025 and has since encompassed 6-0 and 5-1 league defeats, a 2-0 DFB-Pokal elimination, a 3-1 preseason loss and now the 6-1 humiliation in Munich.

Home fortress, away collapse: Demichelis under pressure

The performance laid bare once again the extraordinary inconsistency of Demichelis' side. Leipzig have won every home match in both the Bundesliga and the Champions League this season, yet have lost every away fixture in those competitions — a contrast made starker by the seven-day swing from the demolition of Frankfurt to the capitulation in Munich.

The inconsistency has inevitably raised questions about Demichelis' position. As previously reported, former Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann has reportedly returned to the thinking of some club decision-makers, although Demichelis continues to retain the backing of the hierarchy.

Schäfer's scathing post-match assessment may constitute something of a shift in tone from within the club as Leipzig confront the fallout from their heaviest defeat of the campaign.
