Bodø/Glimt stun Dortmund 1-0 as Fredrik Sjøvold punishes Niko Kovač's wholesale rotation
Borussia Dortmund were the second Bundesliga side to encounter difficulties in Norway in as many days, suffering a 1-0 Champions League defeat to Bodø/Glimt at the Aspmyra Stadion. Niko Kovač's ambitious rotation on the night appeared to backfire, with his side failing to click into gear and find any rhythm.
Bodø/Glimt shaded the opening quarter of an hour and had the pick of the early chances. The first fell to Jens-Peter Hauge, who stung the palms of Gregor Kobel from a corner delivery after the set piece had been poorly cleared by BVB. After that, Patrick Berg made space for Sondre Fet, whose whipped shot flew just past the far post, while Dortmund's sole piece of joy came down the right, where Kostas Karetsas tested Nikita Haikin.
In truth, the hosts ought to have led earlier. Ole Blomberg failed to turn in Hauge's next delivery. Aside from a Fábio Silva header from an offside position before the break, Kovač refused to turn to his bench before half-time.
Warning signs ignored as Sjøvold strikes
Bodø/Glimt marksman Andreas Helmersen brought Kobel into action with a zippy strike, while Blomberg watched a deflected effort yield a corner. Still, Dortmund took no heed of the warning signs.
Berg then fed Sondre Auklend on the right, and his cut-back was steered into the right corner by Fredrik Sjøvold — a deserved lead for the hosts that finally prompted Kovač to act, introducing a quartet of Julian Ryerson, Felix Nmecha, Ethan Nwaneri and Serhou Guirassy.
Dortmund pressure fails to tell
Suddenly, Bodø/Glimt's penalty box became the busier of the two. Haikin kept out Nmecha from range, and Guirassy was denied by a fine block from skipper Aleesami. Frustrations started to grow as Nwaneri's tame header sat up nicely for Haikin to collect, and BVB continued to try to create, with Nwaneri denied once more.
However, with just two minutes of injury time added, a final Haikin save to repel Nmecha consigned Dortmund to defeat — an unsavoury record of four away defeats in succession in the Champions League.
The result leaves Kovač's side reflecting on a costly night in northern Norway, where a much-changed lineup never found the fluency required to break down a disciplined and clinical Bodø/Glimt side desperate to make amends after their heavy Matchday 1 loss to Bayern Munich.
