Jackson double ends Manchester City's perfect start as Aston Villa win 2-1
Aston Villa beat Manchester City 2-1 at Villa Park to end Enzo Maresca's side's 100% start to the Premier League season. Nicolas Jackson scored twice, punishing errors from Marc Guehi and Gianluigi Donnarumma, while Erling Haaland's header briefly levelled. Unai Emery's rebuilt Villa have now beaten City four times in a row at home.
Johan Manzambi header sinks Newcastle as Aston Villa win 1-0 at St James' Park
Johan Manzambi's 36th-minute header gave Aston Villa a 1-0 win at St James' Park, condemning Newcastle to their second successive Premier League defeat under Matthias Jaissle. Sven Botman escaped a red card after a VAR review, and Newcastle set a new club record of 16 successive home games without a clean sheet in all competitions.
£175m spent, bottom of the table: Tottenham's nightmare start branded 'as bad as it's ever been'
Tottenham Hotspur sit bottom of the Premier League heading into the first international break despite a net £175m summer spend, with Roberto De Zerbi's side conceding shambolic goals in defeats to Brentford, Newcastle and Aston Villa and showing a worrying mental fragility.
Tottenham bottom of the Premier League as £175m splurge fails to stop the rot at 'too fragile' Spurs
Tottenham head into the international break bottom of the Premier League after a 3-2 defeat to Aston Villa, with a net £175m spending spree failing to arrest the slide. Roberto De Zerbi branded his side 'too fragile' as three error-strewn goals conceded and growing doubts over the summer recruitment — including a £100m outlay on Sandro Tonali — deepen the sense of crisis at a club that had hoped this season could not be as bad as the last two.
Premier League transfer window verdict: Arsenal's striker drought, Villa's £300m clearout and Chelsea's £117m Rogers coup
A club-by-club verdict on the 2026 Premier League summer transfer window: Arsenal landed Christos Tzolis, Bruno Guimarães and Ezri Konsa but failed to sign a marquee attacker; Aston Villa banked about £300m from nine sales in a radical squad rebuild; Chelsea made Xabi Alonso's first window count with the £117m capture of Morgan Rogers; and the business of Bournemouth, Brentford, Brighton and Coventry is also assessed.
Tottenham hit rock bottom as Wilson warns crisis surpasses last two grim seasons
Jonathan Wilson argues Tottenham’s start to the 2026-27 Premier League campaign under Roberto De Zerbi is the worst in the club’s recent history, with Spurs bottom of the table after a 3-2 defeat to Aston Villa and questions growing over a £175m summer rebuild.
Premier League Transfer Window Verdict: Chelsea Spend Big Under Alonso as Villa and Arsenal Reshape Squads
A comprehensive breakdown of the summer transfer window across the Premier League, featuring Chelsea's £117m capture of Morgan Rogers under Xabi Alonso, Arsenal's £75m move for Bruno Guimarães, and Aston Villa's massive £300m squad rebuild.
Benched Garnacho already at Villa crossroads as Emery tells winger to 'work, work, train, work'
Alejandro Garnacho has played just 31 minutes for Aston Villa since joining on an initial loan from Chelsea two months ago, and has been an unused substitute for four straight matches. Villa boss Unai Emery has told the Argentina winger to keep working as George Hemmings and Ibrahim Mbaye leapfrog him in the pecking order, with the shadow of Harvey Elliott's failed loan spell hanging over Garnacho's arrangement at Villa Park.
Premier League summer 2026 transfer window verdict: Arsenal’s marquee miss, Villa’s overhaul and Chelsea’s rebuild
The Guardian’s club-by-club assessment of the summer 2026 window finds Arsenal frustrated in the attack market, Aston Villa executing a £300m squad refresh, Bournemouth keeping core talent, Brentford adding stability, Brighton banking big profits, and Chelsea beginning a new era under Xabi Alonso with major incomings and outgoings.
