Thomas Tuchel Commits to England Coaching Role for Euro 2028

England Manager Vows to Continue After Semi-Final Defeat

Thomas Tuchel during England's World Cup campaign

Thomas Tuchel has insisted he "100 per cent" intends to remain as England coach for the 2028 European Championship despite the team's 2-1 semi-final loss to Argentina. The German tactician, who signed a new contract in February to oversee the next two years, expressed confidence in the team's potential for improvement after the painful defeat.

"There is still enough to improve, and I am more than happy to do that," Tuchel said in the aftermath of the match. The Football Association has publicly endorsed his continuation, with CEO Mark Bullingham stating on LinkedIn that the coaching staff would "raise everyone for that and then lead us into qualification for our home Euros in 2028."

Identifying Key Areas for Development

Tuchel highlighted possession football as a critical area needing attention. "Ball possession plays a crucial role," he noted, suggesting England lacks the same DNA as teams like Spain or Argentina in maintaining control under pressure. He specifically pointed to the momentum shift after Anthony Gordon's 55th-minute goal as a turning point in the match.

"If it happens, then it has to be changed," Tuchel said when questioned about England's tendency to adopt defensive strategies when leading in major games.

Despite the loss, the coach praised his players, many of whom faced a second consecutive World Cup semi-final defeat. Tuchel expressed satisfaction with the team's performance in the first 55 minutes, describing the squad as "ready to go for it" but ultimately unable to withstand the momentum shift.
