Robin Koch Answers Hütter's Criticism as Frankfurt Beat Köln 1-0 to End 13-Game Wait for a Clean Sheet

Frankfurt's captain delivers the response Hütter demanded

Eintracht Frankfurt captain Robin Koch has answered his critics with a commanding performance in Friday evening's 1-0 Bundesliga victory over 1. FC Köln, a result that handed the club its first home league win since March and its first clean sheet after conceding in 13 consecutive league fixtures.

The 30-year-old German international won all of his aerial duels and earned special praise from head coach Adi Hütter, who suggested his captain had produced his best performance under the returning coach.

The backdrop: a 6-0 humiliation in Leipzig

The scrutiny on Koch had reached a peak after Eintracht's 6-0 Bundesliga defeat away at RB Leipzig the previous weekend. Coverage from 12 October 2026 reported that Christopher Nkunku scored a first-half hat-trick as Leipzig demolished Frankfurt, compounding the club's longstanding defensive problems even after Hütter's return.

Koch was withdrawn at half-time in that match and was subsequently criticised by Hütter, who questioned his captain's ability to organise the defence — while making clear that the defender would retain both his starting place and the captain's armband.

The fact that Eintracht had changed coaches and virtually all the players around Koch over the past 10 months naturally ramped up the criticism directed at the SGE skipper, who officially inherited the armband from Kevin Trapp in August 2025.

"I'm glad I'm the one taking the criticism"

Speaking to Sky Germany after the Köln win, Koch acknowledged that the previous week had been difficult — but framed his role as a shield for the rest of the squad.

"It's never nice when you have to read so much about yourself in public, but that's part of football," Koch explained. "When difficult periods come along, the negative things are directed at the leaders first, and especially at me as captain. But I'm glad I'm the one taking the criticism rather than someone weaker."

The defender insisted the team's collective response mattered far more than his personal rehabilitation. "It was very important for us, for the entire club, especially after last week's game, to show a reaction like that," he said. "I have to give the team enormous credit. It wasn't easy to switch things around again so quickly, but we showed determination and commitment over the full 90 minutes."

No shouting for the cameras

Perhaps Koch's most pointed remarks concerned the expectations surrounding his leadership style. Hütter had specifically criticised his captain's lack of vocal organisation during the Leipzig debacle, but Koch made clear he has no intention of altering his personality to satisfy outside observers.

"I'm not someone who goes around shouting on the pitch," Koch explained. "The lads know that I lead by example during the week and that when something needs to be said, I say it. I'm not going to start shouting just do the cameras can catch it."

Koch's role in organising the defensive line remains crucial to a system that places considerable demands on its central defenders, and Friday's improved showing offered encouragement that the captain can meet those demands without fundamentally changing his approach.

Eyes now on Dortmund

Koch believes the determination Frankfurt displayed against Köln must now become the standard, describing the performance as an important signal to his teammates ahead of next Saturday's difficult Bundesliga assignment away at Borussia Dortmund.

"That was exactly what we need," Koch emphasised. "In Dortmund too!"
