Alonso credits Chelsea’s improved discipline to emotional control
Chelsea seek to stay composed in derby atmosphere
Xabi Alonso has credited emotional control for Chelsea’s improved disciplinary record ahead of Saturday’s home match against Tottenham. Chelsea collected 11 red cards last season, but have not had a player sent off this campaign.
Alonso said concentration and restraint help players avoid overreacting to incidents, making rash challenges or conceding avoidable penalties. He also believes the experience of players signed last summer has contributed to the team’s composure.
“If you are focused on what you have to do, you are prepared for what’s going on. Normally you don’t make that many mistakes and don’t overreact to certain situations.”
The Chelsea manager expects an “electric” atmosphere at Stamford Bridge, where Tottenham have not won since 2018. He warned that total control is difficult to achieve in the Premier League, particularly when the crowd responds to physical duels and open play. Chelsea, he said, cannot relax even when leading.
Alonso also played down his own influence from the touchline, saying the decisive communication and control come from the players on the pitch, particularly the more experienced members of the squad.
Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez is unavailable after breaking his jaw against Everton. Mike Penders is set to start, and Alonso said he had discussed the young Belgian with Thibaut Courtois, who saw similarities between them.
