Bruno Guimaraes Strikes Again as Arsenal Come From Behind to Beat Leeds 2-1
Arsenal came from behind to beat Leeds United 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, as substitute Bruno Guimaraes scored the winner to spare Mikel Arteta's side a third wobble in four Premier League matches.
For the second time in three Premier League matches, the £75m summer signing Guimaraes came off the bench to rescue the champions. Having sparked their 2-0 win at Sunderland in September with the crucial first goal, the Brazilian repeated the trick against Daniel Farke's Leeds, this time netting the decisive strike on his full home debut.
Arsenal fell behind after the interval before Riccardo Calafiori and Guimaraes struck to secure an important three points. Prior reporting described Leeds taking the lead through James Justin's opener, with Arsenal's response arriving inside a frantic eight-minute window.
A great game that exposed old flaws
It was far from a vintage Arsenal performance. For large parts of the contest they were nowhere near their best, and going behind meant they had trailed in a league match for a third time in four top-flight games. Only a David Raya penalty save prevented a similar scenario at Sunderland earlier in the run.
The escape acts have followed a bruising 3-0 defeat at Brighton, after which Arteta demanded his players rediscover their identity. The manager was candid about the contrast in standards.
"The last time we put our shirts on, something was missing," Arteta said. "And we need to be very conscious of that. From being exceptional and being the champions to being extremely average, like in that game, is a really thin line.
"So if you don't want it more than the opponent, you are not able to cope emotionally with certain situations, you're going to suffer. And we all suffered and we didn't enjoy that game, but then you have to learn the lesson and we certainly done that. We speak about it and you could sense that there was something in those tummies."
Guimaraes answers his critics
The 28-year-old midfielder arrived as a 'win-now' signing in the peak years of his career, and he responded to a disappointing full league debut in the Brighton defeat in emphatic fashion. He has now scored two goals that have directly helped his side to valuable points, the first player to score twice from the bench this season, with both strikes coming from outside the box.
Arteta said: "He wasn't at that level against Brighton, and this is the level for Arsenal. Every week, every game, every minute, every action, you have to be at that level.
"Today was much better. That's what we have to demand, and this is what I demand to myself. I'm going to demand the same with the players, because if we do that, he will raise the standards and we will be a better team."
TNT Sports pundit Ally McCoist was impressed by the champions' response. "It was a great game of football. Leeds were brilliant for one hour," McCoist said. "Mikel Arteta made changes when he needed to and the substitutions gave Arsenal what they needed. That's what champions do. Leeds can hold their heads high."
Calafiori leading from the back
While Arsenal's defence — which conceded the fewest goals in the league last season — has already shipped five in six games this term, left-back Calafiori has proved integral to their attacking threat. His equaliser against Leeds was his first league strike of the season, and no defender has been involved in more Premier League goals (one goal, two assists), a snapshot confirmed by player data fetched on 10 October 2026.
Arsenal's win keeps them level on points with leaders Manchester City, but the champions' title defence has certainly not been without its scares.
