Deal on Course for Completion

Arsenal and Newcastle United are nearing a total agreement for the transfer of midfield powerhouse Bruno Guimaraes. Following reports on July 8 that Guimaraes had informed the Magpies of his intention to join the Gunners, both clubs are now moving toward a final resolution.

Arsenal initially expressed a willingness to pay up to £60 million (€70m, $80.2m) for the player. While Newcastle had previously rebuffed a verbal offer below that mark and maintained they would not entertain bids, a mutual desire to close the deal has emerged. Guimaraes, 28, is currently awaiting permission to undergo a medical and finalize his move to North London.

A Tactical Upgrade for the Champions

Coming off a Premier League title win, Mikel Arteta is looking to evolve his squad. Analysis suggests Guimaraes would provide critical spatial awareness and technical leadership. Last season, Guimaraes led Newcastle's squad in line-breaking passes per 90 minutes (16.2), demonstrating a bravery on the ball and ability to operate under high pressure that would reinforce Arsenal's midfield.

The move is strategically timed. With several key midfielders—including Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi, and Mikel Merino—deep in their World Cup campaigns, Guimaraes' early exit with Brazil in the round of 16 on July 5 means he is fit and available to integrate into pre-season training immediately.

Arteta’s push for the Brazilian comes amid a need for "very, very ambitious, very fast and very smart" business. The addition of Guimaraes is seen as a way to manage the heavy workload previously carried by Rice and Zubimendi, who combined for over 8,700 minutes last season.

Newcastle's Summer Overhaul

Guimaraes' departure would be part of a significant transition at St James' Park. The club has already seen the departure of head coach Eddie Howe, who is set to be replaced by Al Ahli's Matthias Jaissle. In terms of personnel, Newcastle have sold Anthony Gordon to Barcelona for €80m and Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur for £100m.

To replenish the squad, the Magpies have invested in youth, bringing in 18-year-old Sean Steur from Ajax (€25m) and 20-year-old Aladji Bamba from Monaco (€40m). Guimaraes joined Newcastle from Lyon in 2022 and leaves as a club captain who helped the team secure the Carabao Cup in 2025.

As co-chair Josh Kroenke stated following Arsenal's title success in May: "If you’re not trying to continually evolve and improve, you’re standing still." The pursuit of Guimaraes is the clearest evidence of that philosophy in action.
