Bournemouth hammer Manchester United 3-0 as Carrick drops Fernandes and teeters on the brink
Bournemouth dismantle sorry Manchester United 3-0
Another desperate afternoon unfolded at Old Trafford as Bournemouth ran out comfortable 3-0 winners on Sunday 25 October 2026, inflicting a third Cherries victory in four years on Manchester United and leaving head coach Michael Carrick's position hanging by a thread.
United captain Bruno Fernandes was dropped to the bench by Carrick and stayed there as Bournemouth coasted to their third straight win. Rayan and Marcus Tavernier struck within five first-half minutes to put United - booed off at the interval - on the back foot, before Evanilson rounded Senne Lammens to curl a stunning second-half effort into the empty net and extend United's winless run to eight games in all competitions.

How the goals came
Ayden Heaven threw himself into a dangerous tackle - luckily without making contact with Evanilson - to concede a free-kick that led to the 38th-minute opener. Justin Kluivert whipped his right-sided set-piece to the far post, where Rayan was completely unmarked to drill it past Lammens into the bottom-right corner, ending his nine-game league goal drought.
Bryan Mbeumo was denied by Djordje Petrovic as United searched for an equaliser, but Bournemouth doubled their lead in the 43rd minute. Adrien Truffert profited from an untimely Leny Yoro slip to tee up Tavernier, who tapped into an empty net.
Things nearly worsened 21 seconds after the break when a loose Harry Maguire pass was cut out by Tavernier, only for Evanilson to be flagged offside. But the Brazilian got his goal in the 71st minute: Lewis Cook went long, Lammens was not quick enough to reach the ball, and Evanilson curled a brilliant finish into the unguarded net from out on the right wing.
Carrick drops his captain
After Fernandes seemingly criticised Carrick's tactics in midweek, he was named on the bench for a Premier League game for only the sixth time, and the first since May 2025 against Brentford. It was the first time Carrick has not named the club captain in his starting line-up in the top flight since he took the caretaker job in January - his 27th game in charge.
It was a must-win fixture for a United side that remain with just one league victory to their name this term (D4 L3). They have tripped in 10 of their last 11 outings without Fernandes in the starting line-up (D3 L7).
The damning Opta numbers
Nothing should take away from Bournemouth's performance. They became just the third side to score 2+ goals in four consecutive Premier League away games against United, after Manchester City (2011-12 to 2014-15) and Brighton (2022-23 to 2025-26).
- Manchester United have won just seven points from eight Premier League games this season (W1 D4 L3) - their lowest at this stage of a league campaign since 1986-87 (4).
- United suffered their heaviest home Premier League defeat since losing 3-0 to Bournemouth in December 2024.
- Bournemouth have scored 18 goals in 10 games at Old Trafford in the Premier League and boast the best goals-per-game ratio of any side to play away at United more than once in Football League history (1.8).
- Rayan led the team with five of Bournemouth's 10 shots and opened his league account for the season, while United failed to convert any of their 17 chances.

How the players rated
BBC Sport's player ratings laid bare the gulf. Among United's starters, only Harry Maguire (6) and Bryan Mbeumo (6) rose above a five, with Senne Lammens (4), Andrey Santos (4), Amad Diallo (4) and Youri Tielemans (4, substituted at half-time) the low marks. Tielemans was described as "not secure enough in possession for the job Carrick wanted from him. Big disappointment."
For Bournemouth, Evanilson (8), Rayan (8) and Tavernier (8) starred, with Adrien Truffert, Lewis Cook, Tyler Adams and Antonio Silva all logging sevens. "Quietly effective," read Cook's assessment; Truffert "seized on Yoro's error to create the visitors' second."
Carrick, meanwhile, appears to be on borrowed time. As the Opta Analyst verdict put it bluntly: "Manchester United manager Michael Carrick appears to be on borrowed time after falling to a heavy home defeat to Bournemouth."
