Bayern Munich hit RB Leipzig for six as Luis Diaz hat-trick sends them top
Bayern Munich returned to the Bundesliga summit in emphatic fashion on Matchday 6, dismantling RB Leipzig 6-0 at the Allianz Arena — a week after the visitors had themselves put six past Eintracht Frankfurt.
Luis Diaz was the standout performer with a hat-trick and an assist, but the hosts were excellent across the pitch. Harry Kane's contribution was particularly impressive: the England captain repeatedly dropped deep to join Bayern's build-up play, creating the space for Diaz and Michael Olise to exploit throughout the 90 minutes.
Bayern's second goal summed up the performance. Kane collected possession deep in his own half before finding Diaz, who set up Aleksandar Pavlovic to finish.
Leipzig could barely get near Vincent Kompany's midfield, while Bayern's relentless pressing kept the visitors pinned in their own half for much of the opening 45 minutes. Martín Demichelis's side failed to register a single shot before the interval, by which point Bayern were already three goals ahead.
Record-breaking home form
What has stood out about Kompany's Bayern since his arrival is their ability to sustain pressure, refusing to slow down even at 5-0. The result left Bayern with 18 goals from their opening three Bundesliga home fixtures — a new league record — and 22 in six matches overall.
It was a strong response after consecutive draws against Augsburg and Viking FK. Bayern had managed 29 attempts on goal against Augsburg before the international break and scored just twice; against Leipzig they recorded the same number of attempts and scored six.
The six-goal haul ended a small run of poor results and moved Bayern to the top of the table, ahead of Freiburg's visit to Leverkusen on Sunday. The performance was not flawless — defensive lapses had proved costly against Augsburg and Viking — but it showed how punishing Bayern can be when everything clicks in the final third.
Arsenal up next
Arsenal visit the Allianz Arena on Wednesday, and the Premier League leaders will provide another test of Bayern's credentials. The build-up has been disrupted by Kompany's absence from media duties; the coach was sidelined by a hip problem and a cold the previous day, with Max Eberl fronting the press conference in his place.
