Brighton humiliate champions Arsenal 3-0 as Arteta admits 'big lesson'

Brighton end Arsenal's perfect start with emphatic 3-0 win

Arsenal's unbeaten start to the Premier League season came to a shuddering halt on the south coast as a clinical Brighton side ran out 3-0 winners at the Amex Stadium. The defending champions, crowned for the first time in 22 years last May, were outfought, outthought and outplayed from the first whistle in what manager Mikel Arteta conceded was "a big lesson" for his side.

For Brighton, it was a statement of intent. Pascal Gross, Charalampos Kostoulas and Chema Andrés rounded off a comprehensive victory, with the Seagulls 2-0 up at the break. With 16 goals from their opening five matches, Fabian Hürzeler's side are the division's top scorers and could have had more against an Arsenal team that prides itself on defensive resilience — the Gunners conceded the fewest goals of any side last season and had let in just one goal, past David Raya, in their first four league games before Saturday's humbling.

'They deserved to win' — Arteta's reaction

Arteta was blunt in his assessment of a performance in which his side were dominated in every area of the pitch. "They deserved to win the game and it's a big lesson for us," the Spaniard said. "From the first throw-in you could sense it, it was so clear. We put ourselves in trouble one time, two times, three times and we need to get out of that much quicker than that."

Asked why Arsenal were so far below par, Arteta pointed to Brighton's intensity and his own side's technical failings. "Well, the first one because Brighton they were really good, and they had another bite, and at the times it was better. There are a lot of moments when the ball is 50-50 and it changes hands and most of the time it was for them. Sometimes there were some technical errors very much involved that opened us up in a really difficult way, but that's something to learn."

The Arsenal boss, whose side did not lose by more than a single goal in the top flight last term, acknowledged the scale of the defeat — their heaviest as reigning champions since 1989, and their first three-goal loss since Brighton won 3-0 at the Emirates on 10 May 2023. "We knew how tough it was going to be and the first thing we had discussed was about the first part. If you don't get out of that first part as winners, it will be extremely difficult to dominate the game and to have any probability of winning the game. We knew that, but that's again credit to them for what they've done because they've overcome us."

Arteta was keen to stress the result should not erase a strong start, with many of his squad returning late from World Cup duty. "That's not going to take away what the team has done and the boys have done in the last six or seven weeks since coming back from the World Cup. What we've done and the way we've competed and the amount of games we've won has been remarkable, but this is a big lesson for all of us to understand what it takes to win at this level."

'They absolutely battered Arsenal' — pundits react

Former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer was scathing on BBC Radio 5 Live. "It should have been more, the chances Brighton created, they were that good. They absolutely battered Arsenal. From start to finish today Brighton were magnificent, every single one of them played their part. They were strong, they were fit, they went after Arsenal. They had no fear and it worked brilliantly for them, it should have been six or seven goals."

Former defender Curtis Davies put the display down to a "blip". "Their form this season has so far been good, this has been a really shocking performance. That defence today was nowhere near what it's used to being. The disappointment will be a set-piece goal conceded, Arsenal will have a real long look at themselves. They didn't lay a glove on Brighton, and didn't make anything of their attacking situations."

Brighton players celebrate after scoring against Arsenal

Hürzeler praises 'good wine' Gross and collective effort

Brighton boss Fabian Hürzeler compared the 35-year-old Gross to "a good wine" after his instrumental display, and praised the team's collective mentality. "Everyone has this mindset today: 'I need to defend first and we defend as a team,'" he said. "We wanted to approach this game by getting small wins. Everyone speaks about a goal is a win, but a small win can be the first throw in, the first corner, win the first header, win the first tackle. If you win these small steps, if you celebrate them individually as a win then you can grow into the game."

Brighton have now recorded victories over the reigning champions in each of the past three seasons, and with 16 goals from five matches are all but certain to go into the international break as the Premier League's top scorers, sitting third in the table. The manner of the defeat — Arsenal have not recovered to win from a 2-0 half-time deficit in a league game since March 2008 at Bolton — will offer genuine encouragement to their title rivals that the champions are far from invincible.
