Barcelona legend Carles Puyol has delivered a glowing endorsement of the club's decision to sign Rodri from Manchester City, describing the move as "very good news" and labelling the midfielder as one of the finest in the world.

Rodri arrived at Camp Nou on a four-year contract after being named the best player at World Cup 2026, and Puyol believes the 30-year-old will be a transformative addition to Hansi Flick's squad.

Speaking to EFE, Puyol — who spent his entire senior career at Barcelona and won six La Liga titles and three Champions Leagues — was effusive in his praise for the Spain international, whose profile he believes is tailor-made for the Catalan giants.

"Rodri is very good news for Barcelona. We're talking about one of the best midfielders in the world," Puyol told EFE. "I had the pleasure of seeing him play live at the World Cup; I like him a lot. He brings a lot of balance to teams and fits perfectly with Barcelona's style of play."

The former centre-back, known for his leadership and defensive nous during Barcelona's golden era, also explained why Rodri's skill set is particularly valuable in the context of Flick's tactical approach — which features a high defensive line that demands coordinated pressing throughout the team.

"I really like playing with a high defensive line. It requires commitment not only from the defenders, because if there's no pressure on the ball, they can create a lot of problems," Puyol explained.

"He's shown that with Spain and at City under Guardiola. He's going to help us a lot; it's a key position, and now Barcelona's midfield is going to be even stronger."
