Barcelona prepare improved deal for Marc Bernal

Barcelona are set to open talks with Marc Bernal over a new and improved contract, with sporting director Deco expected to meet the 19-year-old midfielder later this week.

According to ESPN, the meeting will be used to reiterate Barcelona’s complete faith in Bernal and establish the basis for a salary increase. The club views him as a key part of its long-term plans and wants his remuneration to better reflect his importance.

Bernal signed a five-year contract running until 2030 last year, including a €500 million release clause. However, his wages were not significantly improved at the time because of Barcelona’s financial restrictions and their difficulties complying with Financial Fair Play rules.

Deco had promised that the club would revisit Bernal’s terms once Barcelona returned to the La Liga 1:1 financial rule. That position was reached this summer, improving the club’s ability to invest in the squad and address existing contracts.

Barcelona’s commitment to Bernal is reportedly unchanged despite the imminent signing of Spain captain Rodri. The planned talks are intended to underline the club’s confidence in the young midfielder and provide him with a better salary as he develops into an important first-team player.
