Chelsea's midfield rock: Henderson double and Caicedo class power 5-1 Bournemouth rout

For the first time this season, Xabi Alonso paired Moises Caicedo and Jordan Henderson in central midfield — and Chelsea produced their most complete performance of the campaign in a 5-1 demolition of Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues have had no trouble finding the net this term, scoring 15 goals in six Premier League matches, but their defence had been their undoing, conceding more than any other side with 13 shipped. Against the Cherries, the veteran-and-youngster axis of Henderson and Caicedo finally provided the control and stability Alonso had been searching for behind his free-scoring front three of Joao Pedro, Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers.

Henderson steals the show

The 36-year-old Henderson, signed on a free transfer from Brentford, announced himself in style with his first two goals for the club. He opened the scoring with a curling effort after just 66 seconds before adding a 25-yard free-kick to seal the win. He had also teed up Rogers for the second goal after two minutes and 30 seconds, becoming the third-oldest player to score and assist in the same match for Chelsea — behind only Didier Drogba and Gianfranco Zola.

His arrival reflects a shift in Chelsea's summer recruitment. Having not signed a player over the age of 30 since Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in 2022, the club brought in three this summer: Henderson, goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez (from Aston Villa) and striker Danny Welbeck. Recovered from a broken arm suffered jumping an advertising hoarding during England's World Cup win over Mexico, Henderson is proving he is more than a dressing-room voice.

"We signed him for everything," Alonso said. "If he's able to score two beauties like today, we are more than happy for him. But apart from the goals, he's done many, many good things. I think today was a very complete performance. We were in control for most of the game, so I'm happy with that. We had good stability in defence as well."

Caicedo irreplaceable

There is a strong case that Chelsea cope better without Palmer's creativity than without Caicedo's composure and ball-winning. In his 150th appearance for the club, the Ecuador international lasted 72 minutes before being replaced by Romeo Lavia in a planned change. Deployed deep, he dropped between the back three in possession to free young defender Josh Acheampong to push forward. He misplaced just two passes, posted the best pass-completion rate of any Chelsea starter, and made and won more tackles than any team-mate.

With Caicedo in the side, Chelsea have won 48.1% of their Premier League matches; without him, that figure drops to 25%.

"You always want to have Moises on the pitch. With him, we have a better midfield area and when you are better in the middle, you have a more complete team," Alonso said. "I think that is something to build around. With the players that we have up front, they are solid in defence as well. So, I'm happy that Moises is feeling better because he's going to be a key player for us. We knew that."

Former England striker Alan Shearer told BBC Sport: "Caicedo makes a difference. There's no doubt about it. He gives Chelsea a bit more solidity and stops the ball getting into the back four. He and Henderson have worked really well, the opening goal being a good example. He definitely makes them more solid, I've been really impressed."

Work in progress

Chelsea remain a work in progress. They conceded again through slack set-piece defending, Evanilson netting for Bournemouth to deny them a first clean sheet of the league campaign. The midfield alternatives include captain Reece James — who can also play in defence — and substitute Valentin Barco, who missed the squad. James is the most likely to challenge Henderson for a spot on his return, though the prognosis on his knee issues is unclear.

"I think that they help each other well and they give presence, they give stability," Alonso added. "You know that they are going to be the ones that are going to be helping the rest, not just for their qualities because they understand the game. They can play in shorter spaces but as well defensively they give good balance."

If Henderson and Caicedo can iron out the defensive lapses, Chelsea — already the Premier League's top scorers thanks to Pedro, Rogers and Palmer — can start looking up the table.
