Crystal Palace Close to £11m Gozo Deal

Crystal Palace are in advanced talks to sign American wing-back Zavier Gozo from Real Salt Lake, with sources indicating the deal is trending positively toward completion. The transfer fee is expected to be in the region of $15 million (£11.1 million).

Breakout Season Attracts European Interest

The 19-year-old has made it clear he is ready to move to Europe this summer following a breakout campaign with Real Salt Lake. Gozo recorded six goals and five assists in 16 games this season, playing primarily as a wing-back after initially breaking through as a winger. His game combines elite athleticism and dribbling ability with newly developed quality in the final third.

While Crystal Palace have emerged as the favourites to secure his signature, they are not the only club pursuing the young American. Aston Villa and Atletico Madrid both pushed for a deal in January, according to sources, though other European clubs have been priced out by Real Salt Lake's asking price and the growing interest from England.

International Prospects

Gozo is considered a strong candidate to earn his senior U.S. national team debut this fall. He narrowly missed out on a late push to make the 2026 World Cup squad but has been a regular fixture on youth national teams throughout his development.

Palace's Transfer Strategy

This potential move aligns with Crystal Palace's plans to recruit younger talent and develop them for the future. If completed, it would represent their first major outlay of the summer and second signing overall, following the acquisition of wing-back Oscar Mingueza on a free transfer after his Celta Vigo contract expired.

Palace may utilize Gozo in a forward position where he originally broke through, addressing a area where they lacked depth last season. The club greatly missed player of the year Ismaila Sarr while he was away at the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal, while January signing Brennan Johnson struggled to produce consistent form. The Eagles have not yet replaced loanees Christantus Uche or Evan Guessand in forward positions.

New Era Under Pierre Sage

Crystal Palace named Pierre Sage as their new head coach this summer after Oliver Glasner's successful stint with the club came to an end. Glasner departed following a UEFA Conference League final triumph over Rayo Vallecano that qualified Palace for this season's UEFA Europa League, before moving to Nottingham Forest.

Palace previously ended their 70-year trophy drought with an FA Cup title in 2025. Fellow American Chris Richards remains a key player for the club, which kicks off its season on August 22 against Everton.

Squad Considerations

At right wing-back, Palace are well stocked with Daniel Munoz as first choice and Mingueza providing cover and competition. At 19, it would be a significant responsibility for Gozo to fill that role immediately in the Premier League, suggesting he may be deployed further forward where Palace have greater need.

Gozo would help relieve pressure in the No. 10 role and would be available as a rotation option for Sage, with Palace facing a minimum of eight Europa League matches this season.

Elsewhere in Palace's transfer business, Club Brugge are in advanced talks to sign Romain Esse, while midfielder David Ozoh is attracting interest for a permanent move. The club remain keen to sign two centre-backs following the sale of Maxence Lacroix to Chelsea for £52 million ($69.9 million), with former Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu involved with the squad during the Como Cup. Palace are also looking to strengthen their midfield options.

Real Salt Lake, currently sitting fifth in MLS's Western Conference, had hoped to retain Gozo for the remainder of the season. However, with bids intensifying from various suitors and Gozo's own desire to move, the club is open to an immediate transfer, which now appears to be the most likely outcome.
