Both managers arrive in West London seeking fresh beginnings following tumultuous exits from Real Madrid last season. Alonso, appointed at the Bernabeu after leading Bayer Leverkusen to an unbeaten domestic double in 2023-24, was dismissed in January after a Supercopa de Espana defeat to Barcelona. Arbeloa was subsequently promoted from Real Madrid Castilla to manage the senior side for the remainder of the campaign before he too was replaced.

Alonso took over at Chelsea in May, while Arbeloa was confirmed as Fulham head coach in early July. Arbeloa has already tapped into his Castilla ties, bringing forward Gonzalo Garcia and midfielder Cesar Palacios to Craven Cottage this summer.

Arbeloa’s fiery demeanor was on display in pre-season, where he was sent off during Fulham's friendly against Malaga on August 12 after protesting a late penalty decision. Alonso, meanwhile, has taken a more measured tone, stating he has healed from the "scar" of his Bernabeu departure as he settles into Stamford Bridge.

Speaking previously about their mutual respect, Arbeloa emphasized their enduring connection:

"You all know the relationship we have, how much I appreciate and care for him. It’s mutual and always will be. He wished me the best, and I’d do the same if the roles were reversed. Our friendship comes before everything."
