Suzuki Set for Villa Debut as New Era Begins Without Martinez
Zion Suzuki Completes £30m Move to Aston Villa
Zion Suzuki has officially joined Aston Villa from Parma in a deal worth approximately £30 million (€35 million), and the Japanese goalkeeper is already setting his sights on making a mark in English football's top flight.
The 23-year-old's arrival at Villa Park comes amid the expected departure of Emiliano Martinez, who is widely reported to be leaving the club this summer. Suzuki, who made 22 appearances for Parma last season — keeping six clean sheets — is now in line to make his competitive debut for Unai Emery's side when they travel to face Brighton on the opening weekend of the 2026-27 Premier League campaign.
"This Is the Right Club"
Speaking to VillaTV after completing the move, Suzuki expressed his enthusiasm for the challenge ahead.
"I'm very excited and I'm very happy to be here to start my new journey," Suzuki said. "I think this is the right club to start my first journey in the Premier League. And also they [Villa] are always competing for trophies."
"I want to play at the highest level and that's why I've decided to come here. My dream is to play in the Premier League, now it is time for me to play in the Premier League. I want to prove myself at this highest level. I'm really looking forward to playing on the pitch."
Brighton vs Aston Villa: Opening Day Showdown
Villa kick off their new Premier League season away to Brighton on Sunday, with Fabian Hurzeler's Seagulls looking to build on an eighth-place finish last term that secured them a place in the Conference League qualifying rounds.
Brighton played out a 0-0 draw against Tromso in the first leg of their European qualifier on Thursday, despite dominating proceedings at Romssa Arena. The Seagulls did, however, clinch their European spot last season despite losing their final two matches — and they will be eager to avoid a third consecutive defeat this weekend.
Brighton have not lost three in a row in the Premier League since March 2022, when they suffered six consecutive defeats under then-manager Graham Potter. Hurzeler himself has not suffered three consecutive league defeats since November 2018, when he was managing FC Pipinsried in the German Regionalliga Bayern.
Players to Watch
Brighton – Lewis Dunk: The veteran defender could become the first player to make 300 Premier League appearances for Brighton. Remarkably, he has started all nine of the Seagulls' opening-day fixtures in the competition — the only player to have started 100% of a team's opening-weekend games among sides having played in more than two seasons.
Aston Villa – Ollie Watkins: Against no side has Watkins been involved in more Premier League goals than he has against Brighton, with 11 goal involvements (nine goals, two assists) — all coming in his last nine appearances against the Seagulls. However, it remains to be seen whether the England international will feature, with reports linking him with a move to Al-Hilal.
Match Prediction
Since losing 3-1 to Chelsea on the opening day of the 2020-21 season, Brighton are unbeaten in their first game across five Premier League campaigns (W4 D1) — their longest such run since going 10 seasons unbeaten on opening day between 1969-70 and 1978-79.
However, Brighton have lost 64% of their Premier League matches against Aston Villa (9 of 14), and Villa are unbeaten in their four top-flight meetings against Hurzeler's Brighton (W3 D1). Hurzeler's points-per-game ratio against Emery is also his joint-lowest against any opposition manager in the Premier League.
Opta Win Probability:
- Brighton – 44.1%
- Draw – 24.8%
- Aston Villa – 31.1%
