Cancelo Returns to Barcelona on Permanent Deal After Al-Hilal Exit
Cancelo Makes Camp Nou Return Permanent
Barcelona have confirmed the permanent signing of Portuguese defender João Cancelo on a free transfer, with the 32-year-old putting pen to paper on a three-year deal running until 30 June 2029. The move marks Cancelo's first permanent contract with the Blaugrana after two previous loan spells at the club.
After his Al-Hilal contract was mutually terminated, Cancelo made the trip to Catalunya's capital earlier this week, with the club officially announcing the deal across their website and social media platforms on Thursday. The Portuguese star had been desperate to return to Spain, making clear to his representatives that Barcelona was his only desired destination.
Cancelo's return has been on the cards for some time. He shone during a loan stint in Barcelona's colours over the second half of last season, helping Hansi Flick's side win La Liga for the second consecutive year. Negotiations rumbled on throughout the summer as Al-Hilal dragged their feet on sanctioning a free agent exit for a player with 12 months remaining on his contract. After the 32-year-old made clear his absolute desire to take his talents back to Spain, the Saudi outfit ultimately caved.
Overall, Cancelo has made 65 appearances for Barça across his two loan spells, scoring six goals and providing eight assists. His first stint at the club, however, left him wanting more.
'My Only Goal Was to Return to Barça'
Speaking after the announcement, Cancelo reflected on his journey back to Camp Nou and set his sights firmly on European glory.
'My love for Barça has always been the same, and I'm very happy to be here. The difference is that my first season here left me with a bittersweet feeling. I couldn't win any titles. Last season, however, I was able to do so and fulfil a childhood dream. I still had the league title to win.'
The Portuguese defender also opened up about the turbulent weeks leading to the deal:
'It's been a difficult few weeks, but I was clear about what I wanted. The only other possibility was that I would have stayed at Al-Hilal for a year without playing because my only goal was to return to Barça. My representatives knew that I only wanted to play here.'
Reunion with Rodri
Cancelo will be reunited with Rodri at Barcelona, with the two having previously played together at Manchester City. The pair won 97 of the 134 games they played together at City (D17 L20), conceding an average of just 0.8 goals per game across those matches.
Cancelo was full of praise for his former City teammate:
'Rodri is one of the best players I've played with in my career. He's a player who contributes a lot both offensively and defensively. He's here to help; I've had a good relationship with him since our time at City. He's very easy to play with, and he's here to help Barça. It's important that players who want to be here are with us.'
With Cancelo now part of Flick's defensive setup and Rodri bolstering the midfield, Barcelona are sending a clear message of intent. As Cancelo himself put it: 'A club like Barça has to be prepared to win everything. We're going for the Champions League, obviously. We're going to do everything possible to win the Champions League.'
