Nottingham Forest captain Morgan Gibbs-White will sit out Tuesday's EFL Cup second-round clash against Leeds United after sustaining an injury during their Premier League opener.

Forest face Leeds for the second time in three days following a 1-0 defeat at the weekend, decided by Anton Stach's late free-kick. Gibbs-White completed the 90 minutes despite going down in the second half following a midfield collision, but manager Oliver Glasner confirmed the playmaker will not be risked for the cup tie.

'No structural damage' ahead of Liverpool trip

Glasner offered reassurance that the midfielder had avoided serious damage, with medical staff targeting a return for Saturday's Premier League fixture against Liverpool.

"It's still [Ryan] Yates and [Nicolo] Savona who are out," Glasner told reporters. "Morgan Gibbs-White will miss tomorrow's game. He got the ball and twisted his ankle, so the MCL was a little bit overstretched, and he has some pain in his knee."

"There is no structural damage, but there's no point in risking him. We're working really hard to get him fit for the Liverpool game on Saturday, but he can't make tomorrow's game."

Gibbs-White remains pivotal to Forest's attack after tallying 25 goal involvements (18 goals and seven assists) across 53 appearances in all competitions last season.

Squad rotation expected

Glasner hinted at further changes to his starting lineup to manage workload early in the campaign.

"A lot of players look good and fresh and tomorrow is a cup competition. We want to have the same approach no matter the competition and try to win a trophy," Glasner added. "We've had players come back late and have only had a few weeks for pre-season, so there's no point risking them for a second competitive game in quick succession. We'll have fresh minds, and we'll try to win the game."

Forest hold a strong historical record against Leeds in cup competitions, having won six of their previous seven knockout ties. However, as a top-flight side, Forest have struggled against fellow Premier League opposition in the League Cup, winning only one of their last nine such fixtures.
