Bremer Header Seals Juventus Opening Day Win Over Frosinone

Juventus kicked off their 2026-27 Serie A campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over newly-promoted Frosinone at Stadio Benito Stirpe, with Bremer's first-half header proving decisive.

Bremer celebrates scoring Juventus' winner against Frosinone

Bremer Makes Amends for Kolo Muani Miss

The away side should have taken the lead in the 20th minute, with Randal Kolo Muani blazing over from close range after Bremer's flick-on at the near post. However, Kolo Muani's blushes were spared just two minutes later, as the Brazilian defender powered in a header from Francisco Conceicao's inswinging delivery to break the deadlock.

Luciano Spalletti's side came close to doubling their advantage in the 43rd minute, with Pierre Kalulu firing a strike against the upright via a slight deflection off Lorenzo Palmisani. Frosinone's goalkeeper reacted quickly to deny Kenan Yildiz's follow-up, keeping the hosts in the contest.

Conceicao Lively But Profligate

Conceicao, who provided the assist for the opener, could have put the game to bed seven minutes into the second half, but the winger lashed a first-time attempt over the crossbar after Zeki Celik's left-wing delivery. There was another frustrating near-miss for the Portuguese winger, who, after brilliantly regaining possession from Alessio Zerbin just outside the box, rifled a thunderbolt inches past the left-hand post.

Kolo Muani also narrowly failed to connect with Edon Zhegrova's low ball into the six-yard box as Juventus pressed for a second goal that never arrived.

Vicario Injury Adds Late Drama

New Juventus goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario was substituted off injured in second-half stoppage-time, replaced by Mattia Perin. The substitute was almost immediately called into action and was fortunate to see Gabriele Calvani's header smash the crossbar as Spalletti's men clung onto all three points.

Before his withdrawal, Vicario had been called into action to block Gabriele Bracaglia's first-half strike and repel Seydou Fini's attempt at the near post.

Spalletti's Warning Heeded After Nightmare Campaign

Before Sunday's game, Juventus boss Luciano Spalletti had urged his side to prove themselves, warning that players who are "not ready" would find their futures with the Turin club in doubt. The ultimatum came on the heels of a hugely disappointing 2025-26 campaign, which saw the 36-time Scudetto winners finish sixth and miss out on Champions League football.

While the Italian will have been largely pleased with the result against newly-promoted Frosinone, there were areas of concern. Juventus should have been more clinical, recording 20 shots with five on target and an expected goals (xG) figure of 1.99, yet managing just a single goal. Frosinone, by contrast, registered 11 attempts with two on target, mustering only 0.45 xG.

Historical Context

Juventus have now extended their remarkable run to 34 games without defeat when scoring first in Serie A, dating back to a 2-1 loss to Napoli on January 25, 2025. The Bianconeri have also won all four of their Serie A away games against Frosinone, though this was the first time they scored just one goal away from home against them.

For Frosinone, the defeat continued an unwanted streak. They have now lost all four of their opening Serie A matches (also 2-1 vs Torino in 2015-16, 4-0 vs Atalanta in 2018-19, 3-1 vs Napoli in 2023-24), joining Cremonese, Palermo, and Triestina as the only four teams in top-flight history to have played at least four seasons at this level and always lost their Matchday 1 fixtures.

What's Next?

Spalletti and Juventus will be hoping to build on this result when they face Parma next Saturday. Meanwhile, Frosinone will look to bounce back as they entertain Fiorentina on the same day.
