Dani Carvajal joins Getafe on free transfer after 23 years and 27 trophies at Real Madrid

Real Madrid's most decorated full-back swaps the Bernabeu for the Coliseum

Former Real Madrid captain Dani Carvajal has joined Getafe on a free transfer after his contract at the Bernabeu expired in June. The Madrid-born right-back, 34, had been without a club since the end of last season and has now signed a deal running until the end of the current campaign.

Carvajal spent 23 years with Real Madrid after joining the club's academy in 2002, becoming one of the most decorated players in the history of the game with 27 titles to his name — including six Champions League crowns and four LaLiga titles. He made 451 appearances for the club, contributing to 121 clean sheets and registering 74 goal involvements.

Getafe said they welcomed the defender's "experience and leadership" as he arrives at a club based in the south of Spain's capital, little more than 10 miles from the Bernabeu.

A career defined by silverware — and recent setbacks

Carvajal made 51 appearances for Spain, featuring in the Nations League triumph in 2023 and the European Championship win in 2024. But he has struggled with injuries in recent seasons, suffering a cruciate ligament tear in October 2024 and then another serious knee injury a year later.

The arrivals and form issues limited his final-season minutes in Madrid. According to FotMob, he featured 24 times for Madrid last term, making only 10 starts, while the summer arrival of Trent Alexander-Arnold further restricted his opportunities.

"Dani Carvajal's decision to remain in the Spanish capital and join Getafe across the city adds an intriguing twist to the season."

The move makes sense from a personal and sporting perspective. Carvajal has faced injury setbacks in recent seasons and needs regular football to prove he can still perform at the highest level. Staying in Madrid also allows the defender to remain close to home. For a player so closely associated with Real Madrid, it will be unusual to see him on the opposite side of the city's second derby, but it gives Carvajal the chance to keep playing football, take on a new challenge and show that his career at the top level is not over just yet.

What next for Carvajal and Getafe

Getafe currently sit in the bottom half of LaLiga, with reporting putting them 14th on eight points from as many games this season. Carvajal's first reunion with his former club could come in early January, when he would line up against the side he served for more than two decades.
