Tielemans completes £35m Manchester United switch as Carrick rebuild gathers pace

Youri Tielemans has completed a long-mooted move to Manchester United, with the club activating his £35million ($47m) release clause at Aston Villa to secure one of the Premier League's most accomplished midfielders on a deal that runs until 2031.

United first discussed a deal for the Belgian in the summer of 2019 and again in 2022, but the third approach proved decisive. Tielemans, now 29, said he was “very calm” about previous interest, having spent the summer focused on the World Cup with his national team, where he captained Belgium in five of their six matches before an injury in the warm-up before their quarter-final defeat to Spain.

“It was just an overload of too many games, too many minutes, and my body could not cope with it anymore,” he said of the setback.

Carrick's principles and a return to the top

Speaking to journalists before United's pre-season friendly against Leeds United, Tielemans cut a relaxed figure as he outlined the playing philosophy of new manager Michael Carrick.

“He has got his structure. He wants to have the ball, he wants to press in certain ways. It might be different from what I have been used to before, but it is logical things,” Tielemans said. “It is just smelling football, and that is what I have been doing from when I was young at Anderlecht.”

The midfielder framed his arrival as part of a restoration project at Old Trafford. “There are high demands inside the club,” he said. “When I was younger, when I used to watch the games in the Premier League, Man United was always on top. There was always that mentality of winning games, and that is what we are trying to bring back.

“At Villa, we did amazing things; we achieved the Europa League win. Villa is a great club, and I owe them the world. They have put me back to my best level, so I am very thankful. But there are still clubs above Villa — and Manchester United is one of them. There is a very positive vibe, a very positive mood in and around the club.”

A linker between defence and attack

Tielemans' versatility — comfortable as a No 10 or box-to-box player — gives Carrick new ways to break down deep-lying opponents. Having spoken to the manager briefly before and after United's bid, Tielemans described an instant connection and a role that straddles chaos and control.

“I play forward as much as I can,” he said. “Either to Bruno or the front line, to put them in positions that they can attack with freedom and that they can create and use their qualities. Then, defensively, trying to keep the structure, trying to keep the defensive line together — being that link between the defence and the attack, that suits me the best.”

He added: “When you follow those principles, you can add your offensive qualities. Especially in the last third, where everything is a bit more in freedom, without overcommitting and keeping the defensive line in place. Then we can do good things.”

His arrival follows the departure of Casemiro and the signing of Andrey Santos from Chelsea, reshaping a deeper midfield role that has troubled United since Carrick retired as a player in 2018. In pre-season, Carrick's side have shown settled possession phases and quick passing interchanges, defending in a 4-2-4 shape out of possession with Santos anchoring.

Rashford reunion and mentoring the youngsters

Tielemans spent six months as Marcus Rashford's team-mate at Aston Villa, a creative partnership that could be renewed this season. He was full of praise for the forward.

“His time there, there had been so much talk about him and bringing pressure and the media around him, but he was just so good,” Tielemans said. “He was very humble, hard-working, and from the first training session, you could tell by his touch; his acceleration was amazing. That was just what we needed at Villa as well. He did many good things, and hopefully he can bring them here.”

With a squad featuring Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo, Mason Mount and Santos, Tielemans dismissed the idea of being a mentor but embraced the value of his experience. “Yeah, but I would not say mentor. I would just say that it would help improve the team. I can add my experience, Bruno’s experience, but those two young players already have a lot of experience, and by mixing that, we can do good things,” he said, describing Santos as “a very good midfielder” who stands out for his ability to “recover the ball and then play forward”.

He also reflected warmly on former Leicester City team-mates now at United, noting Jonny Evans — now a coach — had “always been a main character”, while Harry Maguire is “rock solid” and “has improved a lot over the years”.

Fitness and the road ahead

Tielemans' 2025-26 campaign at Villa was disrupted by ankle and calf problems that cost him 21 appearances, but he is confident ahead of United's opener at Hull City on August 22.

“I feel very good. I had a little issue during the World Cup, which is sorted, and I feel 100 per cent fit. I am ready to go, and in 10 days, we will be there,” he said, with United set to play a minimum of 48 matches in 2026-27.

It is a challenge the Belgian relishes. “That is my education, that is my mentality. Wherever I am, I want to win. I have made it here, but it does not mean anything yet.”
