Cole Palmer avoids Manchester United ban as Spurs red card shifts to Liverpool EFL Cup tie

Palmer available for United despite Spurs dismissal

Chelsea playmaker Cole Palmer will be available for Saturday's Premier League meeting with Manchester United at Stamford Bridge, despite being sent off in the Blues' previous top-flight outing against Tottenham Hotspur.

Chelsea's Cole Palmer

Palmer was shown two yellow cards in the second half of Chelsea's 2-0 defeat to rivals Tottenham on Saturday. The England international was cautioned first for an off-the-ball incident involving Spurs midfielder Mateus Fernandes, before receiving a second booking for a foul on Conor Gallagher.

The dismissal carried a one-match ban — but not the fixture many supporters might have expected.

Why the ban falls on Liverpool, not United

In most cases, a dismissal in the Premier League would be served in that team's next Premier League match. However, Palmer's suspension will instead be carried out in the Blues' EFL Cup fourth-round tie away at Liverpool on Wednesday night.

This is because red-card suspensions are applied across domestic competitions rather than being limited to the competition in which the offence occurred. By contrast, bans for an accumulation of yellow cards during a campaign are served only in the competition in which they were picked up.

As a result, Chelsea will be without Palmer for the trip to Anfield, but he will be free to face Manchester United three days after the club's cup tie on Merseyside.

Context: Palmer's season so far

The forward has been a central figure for Chelsea this term. The club tied him down with an improved contract until 2034 on 10 October 2026, underlining his importance to the project at Stamford Bridge.

Earlier in the campaign, Palmer was forced to withdraw from Thomas Tuchel's England squad on 21 September 2026 with a minor muscle injury, cutting short his international return after a strong start to the season.

At the other end of the pitch, Mateus Fernandes — involved in the flashpoint that led to Palmer's first yellow — had made eight appearances in the Premier League 2026-27 season for Tottenham Hotspur at the time of the fixture, registering zero goals and zero assists.
