Carrick welcomes Marcus Rashford back to Manchester United: “He’s our player”

Rashford returns to United’s pre-season squad

Michael Carrick has welcomed Marcus Rashford back into Manchester United’s squad after the forward’s loan spell at Barcelona, insisting that the England international remains part of the club’s plans.

“He’s our player. He’s come back great, like any other player,” Carrick said. “I’ve known him a long time, he gives us something a bit different. He’s been in great spirits since he’s been back, he’s been back two or three days.”

Rashford spent the 2025-26 season on loan at Barcelona, scoring eight goals and registering seven assists in 32 appearances as the Catalan club won LaLiga and the Supercopa de España. He also scored a free-kick against Real Madrid in the match that secured the league title.

Barcelona ultimately chose not to make the move permanent, signing Anthony Gordon instead. Rashford had previously spent a short period on loan at Aston Villa during the 2024-25 season.

A fresh opportunity at Old Trafford

The 28-year-old has made 287 appearances for Manchester United, scoring 87 goals and providing 40 assists. His return to the club’s pre-season camp gives Carrick an opportunity to reintegrate a player he believes can add variety to the frontline.

United began their pre-season campaign with a 1-1 draw against Leeds United before winning 5-4 on penalties. Bruno Fernandes missed from the spot, but Noussair Mazraoui converted the decisive penalty for United.

“It’s nice to score the winning penalty, but even in friendlies, the aim is to win the game,” Mazraoui told MUTV. “The best way to prepare for the full season is to go into every game to win.”

The defender also highlighted the intensity surrounding the fixture, saying the rivalry could be felt despite the match taking place in Dublin. “It was an amazing atmosphere,” he said. “I feel fresh and I’m ready to begin the new season.”
